P420 ARTE CONTEMPORANEA E LIBRI ha inaugurato lo scorso 23 gennaio 2010 il proprio spazio a Bologna in Piazza dei Martiri 5/2, adiacente al MAMBO e nei pressi del centro storico e dalla stazione di Bologna. P420 nasce con il preciso intento di presentare e trattare l'opera di artisti appartenenti alle principali avanguardie nate, in Italia e all'estero, tra gli anni ‘50 e gli anni ‘80, con partico

lare attenzione ai decenni '60 e '70, così incredibilmente ricchi e prolifici di nuove idee e di nuove espressioni artistiche. E' in quest'ottica che la proposta di P420 propone parte dalla corrente Informale degli anni Cinquanta per arrivare alle più recenti esperienze degli anni ‘70, attraverso la destrutturazione di Zero e Nul, le innovazioni artistiche e culturali introdotte dall'Arte Concettuale, Processuale, dalla Land Art, Minimal, Narrative, Performance, Arte ottica-cinetica e Programmata, Arte Povera, Fluxus e manifestazioni multimediali, Poesia Visiva e Concreta, Nuova Pittura, ecc. P420 dedica inoltre la massima attenzione alla ricerca nel settore della documentazione, intendendo arricchire le conoscenze del collezionista mediante una notevole proposta di documenti originali quali cataloghi e monografie degli artisti e delle correnti artistiche trattate. Il supporto documentale non sarà mai considerato secondario all'opera e sarà invece sempre presente nelle mostre e negli allestimenti come parte integrante di un progetto di presentazione dell'Arte Contemporanea al pubblico che integri gli schemi dell'attività commerciale con le esigenze collezionistiche e gli aspetti più prettamente culturali e poetici della ricerca artistica.

: ‘Francis Offman: Più bianco del bianco’

P420 is pleased to announce the opening of Francis Offman’s second solo exhibition at the gallery, titled 'Più bianco del bianco'.

The works of Francis Offman (1987, Butare, Rwanda — lives and works in Bologna, Italy) are composed of freely arranged fragments that evoke, through fragile, minimal and understated references, a distant world — Africa and Rwanda, where the artist spent part of his childhood — as well as its customs, traumatic memories and a sense of uncertain identity. These jagged, dynamic spaces resist the formation of a cohesive landscape.

Offman’s artistic process begins before the work on canvas itself, with the gathering of found and gifted materials that carry individual histories and cultural contexts.

: 'Rodrigo Hernández, I am nothing', BOM DIA BOA TARDE BOA NOITE, Berlin; Heidelberger Kunstverein, Heidelberg, 2017.

This monograph – with texts by Andrew Blackley, Abraham Cruzvillegas, Chus Martínez, Rodrigo Ortiz Monasterio, Daniel Garza Usabiaga, Susanne Weiß, Amy Zion – is Rodrigo Hernández's first major publication, exploring various perspectives on his sculpture 'Figure 1'.

Seven artists, curators, and writers were invited to contribute to this publication. Their reflections on the artist's practice and on this particular work form the backbone of the book. Accompanied by both recent and earlier works, these new texts offer readers different angles from which to view his poetic oeuvre.

The book was published following the eponymous exhibition at the Heidelberger Kunstverein, held from September 17 to November 20, 2016, and curated by Susanne Weiß.

: 'Respite for this Afternoon', the first solo exhibition in the gallery and in Europe by the South Korean artist Xian Kim (1992, Seoul).

Through her practice as a painter, Xian Kim reinterprets familiar creatures and objects, stripping them of all extraneous elements and investigating their deepest essence. Reconstructed on canvas with intriguing textures, using plastics or ceramics, the elements taken from everyday life are transformed into objective, spontaneous still lifes.

Suspended in an idealized void — similar to a world with zero gravity — Kim's subjects escape from the anxieties of the contemporary world to give rise to a peaceful, liberating visual utopia, where the emotional temperature gives way to silent contemplation.

The title of the show, 'Respite for this Afternoon', acts as a conceptual fulcrum for the entire project, and refers to that specific and suspended fraction of time typical of certain afternoons, especially in summer. It is that moment of transition when the light vibrates with dreamy intensity, and chronological time seems to loosen its grip on reality, rooted in the artist's gaze.

to Ana Lupas! 🎉

Ana Lupas was born in Cluj, Transylvania, Romania, where she lives and works. She began to work with textiles in the 1960s and developed her artistic language through happenings and installations. She graduated from the “Ion Andreescu” Academy of Fine Arts in Cluj-Napoca in 1962, and her conceptual approach has strongly influenced a whole generation of Romanian artists.

She founded and directed (1980–90) the nationwide collective for young artists “Atelier 35”. With a clearly avant-garde approach, she developed a multiplicity of performative and conceptual practices, some ephemeral, like direct actions taking place mainly within natural environments.

: 'Progetto Genesi. Arte e Diritti Umani', a group exhibition at Fondazione Malvina Menegaz - Ente Cultura Abruzzo, curated by Ilaria Bernardi and featuring Victor Fotso Nyie and Francis Offman’s work.

Victor Fotso Nyie's work delves into the intersection of personal narrative, cultural restitution, and the spiritual resonance of ancestral memories. His sculptures, often crafted in triple-baked terracotta with waxed finishes, are imbued with a powerful iconography that bridges contemporary figuration and Pan-African vernacular traditions.

Francis Offman's pieces are free compositions that imply fragile references, minimal and understated, to a faraway world (Africa and Rwanda, where the artist spent some of his childhood) and its customs, a traumatic memory and an uncertain identity; jagged, dynamic spaces that cannot give rise to an integral landscape.

The show is part of a traveling, interdisciplinary, and inclusive project that integrates exhibition and educational activities with the goal of fostering lifelong learning in human rights.

Milan Grygar's work at 'In the End There Will Be No End. Neo-Avant-Garde and Contemporary Artists from the Art Fond Collection, Bratislava', a group exhibition at Ludwig Múzeum, curated by Katarína Bajcurová and Lucia Gregorová Stach.

For about half a century, starting in the mid-1960s, Milan Grygar has developed a body of work whose premise is the inseparable character of two senses occidental art has often seen as distinct: sight and hearing. His works have an essential connection with sound: they record its transpiring in visual form, or constitute a more or less detailed score through which to produce it.

The exhibition, whose title is borrowed from a work by Kristián Németh presents the ART FOND Collection from Bratislava, in which the neo-avant-garde strategies of late modernism remain urgently relevant today.

Remembering Irma Blank on what would have been her birthday: the 24th August 1934. 🕊️

The production of Irma Blank fits into the minimal-conceptual neo-avantgardes of the late 1960s, proposing a radical and very personal solution to the issue of pursuit of an inexpressive and de-subjectivized art.

Starting in 1968, Irma Blank has inscribed signs on paper, recording an act of manual tracing. Her work is the expression of a work-time: it is the time spent with the artwork, a portion of life inscribed inside its perimeter.

'MÁS GRAVES', June Crespo's solo exhibition at Kunsthalle Lissabon.

June Crespo has been developing a sculptural and installation practice that investigates the relationship among the body, matter, and architectural space, creating a tension at the limits of scale, weight, and physical presence.

For this project, conceived specifically for the space of Kunsthalle Lissabon, Crespo developed a large-scale sculpture that takes the architecture of the exhibition space, located in a basement, as a starting point and active matter of the work.

Laura Grisi’s work at ‘SOUND BIESENTHAL’, a group exhibition at Wehrmuehle Museum, curated by Domenico Positano and Tjioe Meyer Hecken.

Occupying a distinct position that is difficult to pinpoint within any single artistic trend of the 1960s-70s, Laura Grisi’s oeuvre now appears as one of the most original and personal cases of conceptual art and diagrammatic thought (both sensory and mental), in which reasoning is shown through icons and by means of visual representations.

‘Sounds’ (1971) is a work consisting in two sound-cassettes containing a magnetic tape in which sound is presented as a documentation of a physical reality. Natural elements are perceived at a given moment and recorded in terms of sound: a study of similarities and of minimal differences between sounds produced by the same element under different conditions.

Central to the exhibition - the 6th edition of ART Biesenthal - is sound itself — not only as a medium, but as a conceptual tool through which questions of perception, space, memory, and social relations are considered.

: John Coplans

Aiming the camera only towards himself, John Coplans questioned popular culture’s crystallized take on the male body and its connection to classical sculpture, producing humanist counter-monuments that underscore ideas of decay and vulnerability. His photographs display a number of interventions in which the body is cut and reconfigured into details and partial views, a gesture that echoes the ongoing fragmentation of bodies and matter in the digital realm of the web.
