Villa San Michele is an original historical house and was the home of its Swedish creator, the physician and writer Axel Munthe. In ancient times an imperial Roman villa stood here and the ruins are still visible in the garden. The architecture enhances the wide landscape and frames the works of art exposed in the villa. Part of San Michele is also the Barbarossa Castle, a natural oasis , no

w an Ornithological Station of Anacapri. Since 1950 the villa has been administered by the Swedish San Michele Foundation.

Villa San Michele is in Stockholm!

Last Friday, Villa San Michele’s director, Kristina Kappelin, shared insights with the Friends of San Michele (San Michele’s vänner) about the past season, the Villa’s vital role in Swedish society, and its exciting future ahead. Villa San Michele is not only a cultural landmark, but also a hub for social impact, Swedish promotion, bridge-building, inspiration, and innovation (slide 5).

Tonight at 6pm, we’re at the for our joint vernissage and event “Here and Elsewhere: Chia, Munthe, Ponti in Conversation”, commemorating the 75th anniversary of Axel Munthe’s passing.

Here and Elsewhere features a selection of unpublished works on paper by Chia, created for this occasion, in cases designed by Giò Ponti, alongside historical images by Axel Munthe. The exhibition is conceived as a dialogue between Chia’s artwork, Munthe’s biography, and Ponti’s design. The exhibition is open until March 2025. Don’t miss it if you’re in Stockholm!

A glimpse of our time with the mid October - mid November Fellows. It’s been sunny almost every day here, and as the restaurants and tourist shops on the islands begin to close, our Fellows have enjoyed the luxury of empty beaches, Scandinavian summer weather, and long conversations outside about literature, education, art and each other’s projects—until it gets too cold to stay out.

In the conference room, those who wished shared presentations and photos of their work. We even created our own ‘restaurant night,’ thanks to Johan, who cooked for everyone after the restaurants where the Villa is a regular had already closed for the season

Thank you for being here and sharing with us Joakim Öhlen, Susanna Carlsten, Malin Gren Landell, Helena Jonasson, Magnus Kjellson, and . We hope to see you all again soon!

Now, we prepare to welcome the last group of Fellows for the season💫

✨ The Face of the Sphinx ✨

Gazing silently over the Bay of Naples, our 3,200-year-old red granite sphinx from Egypt is shrouded in mystery. Axel Munthe positioned her to watch over the bay—making her face nearly impossible to see. Legend says Munthe saw her in a dream, set sail, and brought her here. How she arrived and her origins? A secret Munthe took with him🌊✨

For a rare glimpse of her face, take the hidden path up the Phoenician steps… she might just reveal herself…

✨ Afrodite at Villa San Michele ✨
This marble head of Aphrodite, found in Munthe’s study, is a Roman copy of the famous Aphrodite of Knidos, crafted by Praxiteles in the 4th century BC. The delicate features and classic hairstyle suggest she was once part of a life-sized statue, likely depicting the goddess emerging from a bath. Similar sculptures have been found in Rhodes and other ancient sites. A timeless symbol of beauty and grace, admired since antiquity.

🚨The Ornithologists Have Landed!🦅

Every year, thousands of migratory birds flock to Capri during migration season, with about 90 different species being studied and ring-marked at Villa San Michele’s Barbarossa Castle.

The ornithological station at the Barbarossa Castle is run by the Ornithological Ringing Centre in Bologna, one of the largest in the Mediterranean (Progetto Piccole Isole)🌿✨ Led by Dario Piacentini, the team collaborates with Ottenby in Sweden, unlocking the secrets of these winged travelers.

Ongoing studies cover everything from the diseases carried by birds’ ticks to how their movements are changing due to climate change—helping us understand the developments in our world.

At the narrow entrance of Villa San Michele, Axel Munthe placed a symbolic installation to introduce himself to visitors. The rosette window at the top symbolizes the sun and light. Below, a fragment of a Roman sarcophagus relief depicts the Judgment of Paris, the mythological event that leads the Trojan War. This duality mirrors Munthe’s contemplation of beauty and mortality. Nearby, the tombstone of a Roman soldier reflects his fixation on death. On the floor is a copy of the famous Pompeian mosaic, Cave Canem, Beware of the dog, paying tribute to Munthe’s love for animals and his advocacy for animal protection.
