Villa San Michele is a museum open all year round and an honorary consulate of Sweden

Villa San Michele is an original historical house and was the home of its Swedish creator, the physician and writer Axel Munthe. In ancient times an imperial Roman villa stood here and the ruins are still visible in the garden. The architecture enhances the wide landscape and frames the works of art exposed in the villa. Part of San Michele is also the Barbarossa Castle, a natural oasis , now an Ornithological Station of Anacapri. Since 1950 the villa has been administered by the Swedish San Michele Foundation.

The screening of La Peau by Chiara Sabatini, starring Joanne Palmaro, was our last cultural event of the season.

Filmed in Capri and at Villa San Michele we are especially happy to support women working in film and the audiovisual arts, and to see Villa San Michele continue to be a place where ideas, creativity and inspiration can grow.

September Artist in Residence, Jennifer Bergkvist.

Jennifer Bergkvist is a Stockholm-based graphic designer and artist, and co-founder of the design studio Ateljé Grotesk. Educated at Konstfack, she works across editorial design, visual identities, books and publications, alongside an artistic practice centred on the book as both format and medium.

Her practice sits at the intersection of graphic design, craft and art, with a particular interest in the physical qualities of the book. Through experimental and analogue processes, she explores how typography, image, paper, print and binding can become active parts of a narrative, carrying meaning and emotion.

During her residency at Villa San Michele, Bergkvist has been working on an artist’s book combining poetry and printmaking. Exploring themes of memory, desire and intimacy, she has been experimenting with scent, movement and different materials, and the ways in which they can become part of the reading experience.

Join us tomorrow for a screening of La Peau, a short film by Chiara Sabatini, filmed at Villa San Michele and on Capri, with the director and actress Joanne Palmaro in attendance.

The evening begins with a cocktail on the terrace of Villa San Michele’s Billy’s Bar followed by the screening.

Meet our current artist in residence, Lena Bergström.

One of Sweden’s leading glass artists and designers, Lena Bergström has worked across glass and textiles for more than three decades. Educated at Konstfack in Stockholm, she has collaborated with Orrefors since the 1990s, while developing an independent artistic practice centred on material, movement and form.

Nature is a recurring source of inspiration. Her sculptural Planets are blown, cut and polished into organic forms reminiscent of shells, flowers and wings. Pictured here are works from the Planets series, including her 2010 installation on the Dutch island of Ameland, as well as pieces from Le Na Land and Rose. Also featured is Carat, her collection for Orrefors, which reinterprets traditional cut crystal through irregular, jewel-like facets.

Visste ni att Villa San Michele - Capri har en olivodling? Många kom och lyssnade på Bokmässan i eftermiddag och nästa chans är i morgon kl 11.20 på Grön Scen. Om 1000-åriga olivträd, om en skräpig tomt som fick terrasseringar och nyplanterade träd. Om stiliga trädgårdsmästare och en ny framtida attraktion på Villa San Michele - Capri. 11.20 i morgon, missa inte.

An often-overlooked corner of the Loggia delle Sculture. Opposite the statues and columns, the villa’s white walls are dotted with small fragments of ancient reliefs. At the far end, what may once have been an open doorway is now filled by the beautiful mosaic of the olive tree.
