Lord Curzon, the then Viceroy of British India (1899-1905) conceived the idea of establishing the Victoria Memorial Hall(VMH), Kolkata on death of Queen Victoria in 1901. It was intended to be a period museum in memory of the queen with particular emphasis on Indo-British History. itecture), the splendour of the Memorial is evident in its architecture, which is predominantly Italian Renaissance in character, blended with nuances of Orientalism. The Prince of Wales laid the foundation stone of the Victoria Memorial Hall on 4 January 1906 and it was formally opened to public in 1921. It was declared an institution of National importance by the Government of India Act of 1935. Today Victoria Memorial is considered to be one of the best example of the unique paradigm of the visual arts where four diverse fields of arts – architecture, sculpture, painting and gardening come together.

Victoria Memorial Hall, in collaboration with Manipal Hospital, EM Bypass, organised an Art Therapy and Creative Wellness Workshop titled “Creativity Never Retires”, bringing senior citizens together through art, creativity and self-expression on 22 August 2026.

Facilitated by Mr. Muktinath Mondal, Assistant Professor, Government College of Art & Craft, Calcutta, the workshop saw enthusiastic participation.

Smt. Agnimitra Paul, Hon’ble Minister of Urban Development and Municipal Affairs, Government of West Bengal, also interacted with participants and created a painting with them.

On the occasion of Senior Citizens’ Day, Victoria Memorial Hall, in collaboration with Manipal Hospital, EM Bypass, inaugurated “Creativity Never Retires” on 22 August 2026 - an Art Therapy and Creative Wellness Workshop celebrating the power of creativity, self-expression and wellbeing at every stage of life.

The programme was inaugurated with the offering of flower petals by our Chief Guest, Smt. Agnimitra Paul, Hon’ble Minister of Urban Development and Municipal Affairs, Government of West Bengal; Dr. Sayan Bhattacharya, Secretary & Curator, Victoria Memorial Hall; Mr. Komal Dashora, Hospital Director, Mukundapur Cluster, Manipal Hospital; Ms. Soma Chakraborty, Marketing Head, Mukundapur Cluster, Manipal Hospital; Mr. Muktinath Mondal, Assistant Professor, Government College of Art & Craft, Calcutta; Dr. Sanjay Basu, Senior Consultant; and Dr. Sumanta Dey, Lead Consultant, Manipal Hospital and senior member of the senior citizen community.

Through art, participation and creative engagement, the workshop celebrates the message that creativity never retires.

Dholavira, one of the finest urban centres of the Sindhu-Saraswati Civilization, has yielded what is regarded as the largest known stone sculpture from the entire civilization spread across the northwestern part of the Indian Subcontinent.

Found during the excavations near the Eastern Gate of the Castle, this large sculpture is more than just an artefact. It stands as living evidence of a sophisticated artistic tradition of stone sculpting that began over 4,500 years ago and has continued unbroken in India.

From such monumental works of the Indus-Saraswati era to the modern craft of stone sculpting, India has preserved and carried forward this civilizational thread.

Dholavira does not merely preserve the past, it affirms that the creative genius of the Sindhu-Saraswati Civilization continues to beat throughout India.

Victoria Memorial Hall in collaboration with DAG Museums presents the third edition of Past in Print.

Running up to the opening, students from five different schools participated in a workshop exploring the integral relationship that print has played in the freedom struggle. Through the workshop they engaged with posters of different national icons to understand how shapes, colours, symbols and medium works to visually establish a figure as an icon.

They employed these strategies to compose their own posters, which were then to be printed using serigraphy printmaking method. Our practicing print maker apprentices worked with the students to draft, segregate into layers, and finally screen print the posters.

You can come see the students' artworks exhibited alongside iconic artworks from the DAG Collection at the Victoria Memorial Hall, Kolkata from 19-30 August 2026 (Mondays Closed).
