🪂 The Battle of Crete, launched on May 20, 1941, stands as one of the most daring chapters of World War II, marking the first time a major invasion was carried out primarily from the air. Thousands of German paratroopers descended in a massive airborne assault known as Operation Mercury, targeting strategic locations across the island. The turning point of the conflict occurred at the Maleme airfield near Chania. Once German forces seized this critical site, they were able to fly in the relentless reinforcements that eventually secured their foothold.

⚔️Despite the superior air power of the Axis, the invaders were met with a defiant defense from a combined force of Allied soldiers and local Cretan civilians. The local population’s fierce resistance was so unexpected and intense that it inflicted devastating losses on the German forces, leading Hi**er to later abandon large-scale airborne operations for the remainder of the war. While the island eventually fell by June 1, the battle remains a global symbol of the unbreakable spirit and legendary courage of the Cretan people.

🐍Minoan pottery was so high-quality it was traded all the way to Egypt and the Levant. It was the "designer label" of 1600 BC! The Snake Goddess, representing fertility, protection, and the link between the earth and the heavens.

👑 In Greek mythology, Aegeus was an archaic figure, born in Megara. was the father of Theseus, the founder of Athenian institutions and one of the kings of Athens.

⚔️ While visiting in Athens, King Minos' son, Androgeus managed to defeat Aegeus in every contest during the Panathenaic Games. Out of envy, Aegeus sent him to conquer the Marathonian Bull, which killed him. Minos was angry and declared war on Athens. He offered the Athenians peace, however, under the condition that Athens would send seven young men and seven young women every nine years to Crete to be fed to the Minotaur, a vicious monster. This continued until Theseus killed the Minotaur with the help of Ariadne, Minos' daughter.

🌊 After his adventures in Crete, Theseus returned by ship to Athens. His father, Aegeus previously had asked him to hang a white sail as a sign that Theseus is alive, but Theseus neglected this request because of their celebration. When Aegeus saw Theseus' ships without a white sail, he assumed the worst and threw himself in his grief into the sea, named after him the Aegean Sea.
