Last month we were delighted to join Earth Day at Yeovil Country Park, YEOVIL COUNTRY PARK. This amazing event encouraged understanding of the climate, and was a celebration of the natural world.

Using recycled, donated and secondhand materials we were joined by children of all ages who learnt weaving techniques and how to make pom-poms turning waste into something colourful and fun they could take away.

It was an honour to be part of the day filled with amazing performances, workshops and conversations about the environment.

✨ Gorgeous exhibition 'Beneath the Act' by Jackie Hughes is on display with us from 23 - 30 May! ✨

Extract from accompanying text...

"This body of work celebrates the quiet strength and resilience carried by women. Using cyanotype, archival imagery, and botanical forms, figures appear composed and self-contained, holding stories beneath the surface. Hand and machine embroidery bring these hidden layers into view, tracing moments of vulnerability, endurance, and growth.

Rooted in personal experience and a wider shared narrative, the work reflects a journey through challenge towards strength. Softness becomes a source of power, not fragility. Each piece honours what is often unseen—inner resilience, healing, and the beauty that emerges through adversity."

Creativity and Wellbeing week ✨️

Art and Creativity comes in so many forms. For lots of people it provides a way to express yourself that words can't always do on their own. It can be inspiring and exciting or bring calm and solace and everything in between. It can provide a space to just be and enjoy the process.

We know the power of viewing art and having creativity in everyday life and our general surroundings can be so positive!

So we just had to give a shout out to our wonderful Wellbeing Art Club, with a complete array of the things they have been up to when they carve out a couple of hours of their week for creativity.

From the Wellbeing club to our Saturday Art Club and YAY, in fact any workshops and exhibitions we run from YAS, and with our Yeovil Creatives, creativity connects people to each other and themselves! ✨️

At Yeovil Art Space we recently hosted art leaders from Yeovil schools to discuss the creative education programs available.

This gathering marked the first knowledge exchange space, and participants expressed a desire for future meets to enhance art education in local schools. Our Engagement Director and Connect Somerset Champion Natasha Rand hosted the event.

Attendees learned about the upcoming "Yeovil Reimagine" project, and resources related to the recent film "Kahaani" were shared.

Local artist Julie Swinnerton presented her "Bloomin Yeovil" project, which involves creating a collaborative international flower sculpture inspired by different countries and their national flowers.

"Thank you for yesterday. Really nice to spend time being creative with such a lovely like minded group.

Art teachers will bring this art project to their school communities, as part of a global learning initiative by creating their own flower window boxes, with all pieces to be displayed as one at the 'Yeovil Together' event on July 5th at Westlands Entertainment.

JACKIE HUGHES – BENEATH THE ACT

23-30 MAY

This work celebrates women’s quiet strength and resilience. Funding announced for YEOVIL REIMAGINE!

We are so thrilled to announce major funding for a new two-year programme 'Yeovil Reimagine' bringing an inclusive art and cultural offer to Yeovil, starting in the town centre.

Through major public realm art commissions by national and international artists, community partnerships and flagship cultural events, Yeovil Reimagine will bring new cultural offers for the community and support new creative enterprises led by young people.

Yeovil Art Space has secured £400k including generous funding from £200k from Arts Council England's National Lottery Place Partnership Fund, alongside match funding from Somerset Council and local partners.

Phil Gibby, Arts Council England's Area Director for the South West comments,

“We’re proud to invest in Yeovil Art Space through our Place Partnership Fund - We know culture has the power to revitalise high streets, connect communities and build pride in place, yet historically not everyone has had equal access to these opportunities. By creating more ways for people to participate in creative experiences close to home, programmes like this are helping our investment reach more people across the region, and we look forward to seeing local resident’s benefit.”

Councillor Mike Rigby, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Economic Development, Planning and Assets says

“This is a fantastic project which will help to breathe new life into the town centre of Yeovil, working in tandem with the ongoing regeneration work,” adding “It’s particularly satisfying that this will harness the talents of young people in our communities who will help leave a lasting impression on their town.”
