In Bangladesh, snakes hold a complex and deeply rooted significance that blends religious mythology, folklore, and fear, particularly in rural areas. They are simultaneously revered as divine, sacred creatures associated with fertility and protection, and feared as dangerous beings.

A Naga, Sanskrit for snake, is a divine or semi-divine half-human, half-serpent being in Hindu and Buddhist mythology. They inhabit the netherworld, acting as nature spirits and guardians of water, fertility and treasures.

The form of the serpent, or Naga, recurs throughout our current exhibition, Mrinalini Mukherjee: Unbound Forms - Women Sculptors of India and Bangladesh. In particular, it recurs across Mrinalini Mukherjee and Novera Ahmed’s work, both artists using the snake to symbolise the duality between power and nature.

You can transform yourself into a sculpture in Hepworth Hats this Wednesday 26th August, 11am-4pm, or play and create with ink inspired by our art in our Sculpt in Ink workshop on Sunday 30th August, also 11am-4pm.
