Bluebell Railway Museum and Archive

Bluebell Railway Museum and Archive The Bluebell Railway Museum and Archive hold a wealth of interesting items and material from the Bluebell Railway and the Southern Railways of England.

The Bluebell Railway Museum tells the story of the Lewes to East Grinstead Railway line and illustrates the history of railways in the South of England
The museum was opened on 23 June 2011 by Lord Faulkner of Worcester, president of the Heritage Railway Association. The museum at Sheffield Park tells the story of the Bluebell Railway, which began as the Lewes and East Grinstead Railway (LEGR) in

1882, being taken over by the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway (LBSCR) a year later. It also outlines how railways developed from the horse drawn railways of the 1600s, to steam locomotives and then electric trains. The tenacity and diligence of those responsible for acquiring the items which record the history of railways in Southern England has resulted in one of the finest collections available and one which is of national importance.

Now the Armoured Train Display has been announced it's a good time to mention what will be on display between it and the current Woking Homes display. For a few weeks either side of the Bluebell's Giants weekend the Museum will be celebrating the contribution made to Railway Preservation by Woodham's Barry scrapyard. Over 200 of the engines sent there for scrap, live on at railways all over the UK. This fascinating story will be told in words and pictures. You can also find out why in the picture of 34059 has reserved for Mid-Hants Railway painted on the side. Picture from Southern Railways Archive.
