Our Learning and Events team spent today at Tringsowngreenman Apple Day, Tring, speaking about all the ways animals adapt to autumn and winter - Hibernation? Caching food? Migrating? 🍂

Located next to Sustainable Tring moth traps we enjoyed admiring their finds too! Can you help ID the species?

Tooth be told, our crocodile is looking pretty sharp right now.

Our housekeeping team have been busy systematically high level cleaning our specimens today. All teeth are carefully cleaned and checked successfully.

Both roles offer a meaningful opportunity to make an impact at NHM Tring. We provide training and support to enable you to be confident in the role, joining a dynamic team of current volunteers and staff.

To help celebrate our Blue Plaque for Dorothea Bate some of the museum's current staff shared the collections they work on. Kathryn Rooke, the Museum Archivist, helps to look after the museum's institutional archives. The Archive spans nearly 200 years and includes building plans, scientific research notes and thousands of letters and photographs. Sharing and talking about collections though, is her favourite part of the role!

Have you had a challenging summer with your pond?

Our team have been working hard to maintain our education ponds here at Tring. We are lucky to have two biodiverse ponds to showcase to school and public groups how important ponds are to wildlife.

The rains have returned (although not today!) and we hope our ponds continue to thrive into the future.

Tring has a new Historic England national blue plaque! Unveiled this week for pioneering palaeontologist Dorothea Bate, Officer in Charge of this museum 1948 - 1951.

From the age of 19, Bate was one of the first women scientists at the Natural History Museum, London. Her discoveries reshaped our understanding of prehistoric animals, publishing more than 80 scientific papers. Bate became Officer in Charge at the Natural History Museum at Tring after the Second World War becoming responsible for the management and display of the museum's collections during an important time in its development.

We were delighted to celebrate on Monday, along with Historic England, and over 100 attendees including two local schools Tring School and Dundale School.

We were also delighted to host different departments from the Natural History Museum, London, displaying Dorothea's material and NHM Library and Archives

We are continuing the celebration for Dorothea Saturday 12 September with a day of activities for all the family. Join us 11:00 - 15:00!

📢 Reasons to visit NHM Tring next Saturday 12 September for a highly anticipated free event for all the family 11:00 - 15:00!

2. Mini museum doors trail - spot our doors, open them up and find out all about Dorothea. Can you find them all?

3. Dino dig kits - have a go at digging for your own fossils in gallery 2. Do you have what it takes to be a palaeontologist?

4. - author of Mammoth Rider will be on hand with activities and to talk all things fossils.

5. Meet Dorothea herself! will be running free workshops learning all about Dorothea, and having meet and greets in the galleries. Ask about her life and discoveries!

7. Spot the mammoth footprints around the galleries, and learn some interesting facts relating to Dorothea

All activities FREE and drop in, workshops first come first served. We hope to see you there for this exciting one off and unique event for Tring.
