Towcester Museum Trust is a registered charity (Charity number 1120909) founded in 2003 and dedicated to providing a quality museum and visitor centre for Towcester. Located in the courtyard of a former Georgian coaching inn in the heart of historic Towcester, the museum provides a centre for tourism and historical information for the district and a much needed focal point for the exhibition, display and interpretation of the history of the Towcester district.

🥂 Today in History! 🥂

On this day in 1509, the 18-year-old King Henry VIII married his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, at the Palace of Placentia in Greenwich.

Their marriage marked the beginning of one of the most famous royal stories in English history. At the time, few could have imagined how this union would eventually shape the future of England, influencing religion, politics, and the Tudor dynasty itself.

Did you know… 👑📜

Today in 1215, English barons served an ultimatum on King John — a dramatic moment that would eventually lead to the creation and signing of the Magna Carta, one of the most important documents in history.

The Magna Carta helped shape ideas about justice, rights, and the rule of law that still influence the world today.

Why not visit Towcester Museum and explore the fascinating stories of our past? From local history to national events that changed history forever, there’s always something new to discover.

These artefacts are what our work experience student found really interesting, why not pop in and see them for yourself?
No 1 Civil war helmet.
Here’s some of the history about it: The helmet would have been worn by a harquebusier during the civil war. Took place 1642-1651
Reasons why I chose this: The reason why I chose this helmet is because it was a significant part of British history, having a massive impact on Towcester. During the civil war Towcester was a stronghold for the royalists.
No 2 German iron cross and British propaganda cross.
The crosses are from two different nations, Britain and Germany.
The first cross was rewarded for gallantry in the German army.
The second cross was the British mocking the German military.
Some reasons why I chose this: The two crosses to me represent the relationship between Britain and Germany at the time, showing the massive rivalry between the two countries. The crosses are significant to me because it shows how even something as small as a military cross was still battled against.
No 3 Statue of Mother Goddess.
The statue represents motherhood, fertility and creation. Being the embodiment of Earth.
The statue is made out of white clay and was mass produced for Roman families.
Some reasons why I chose this: The statue for me represents what Romans were. The statue is a good example of Roman history in Towcester.
