Torquay Museum The Museum at the heart of Torbay English Riviera Global Geopark full of fascinating stories We are at the heart of the Torbay English Riviera Global Geopark.
(144)

Founded in 1845 Torquay Museum is Devon’s oldest established Museum. We have an exciting programme of temporary exhibitions, children's activities and events and an education service for schools. Our permanent exhibitions tell the fascinating story of Torbay's natural and cultural heritage. The Time Ark tells the story of our planet and the moments when earth-shattering changes took place, such a

s the great mountain building of the Carboniferous period and the huge swings in climate that took place in the Pleistocene, from tropical to arctic conditions and back. See amazing artefacts and fossils from Torquay's famous Kent's Cavern prehistoric caves, where our ancestors made their home as long as half a million years ago - Neanderthal tools, woolly mammoth teeth, cave bear skulls and the jawbone of what is thought to be the oldest human in north west Europe. Follow the incredible journeys made by Torquay's famous explorers, from the frozen wastes of the Antarctic to the depths of the Brazilian rain forest and come face-to-face with wonderful artifacts from ancient Egypt, including Devon's only Mummy. Why not visit our lovely café serving home cooked local produce. Our shop stocks an excellent range of quality gifts, cards and books, including an extensive stock of secondhand and new books by Agatha Christie.

OBJECT OF THE WEEK: Percy Fawcett’s Dentures

Percy Fawcett wore these front dentures, on display in our Explorers gallery. He lost his teeth through a football accident. His wife, Nina, wrote a note in 1933 explaining the importance of the dentures in identifying any remains that may become known.

🥳🛕 Celebrating the New Year in Ancient Egypt

The Egyptian year was organised according to seasonal Nile River cycles, which dictated dates for ploughing, harvesting, and celebrating festivals. This statue group for the parents of Lymhotep bears a feast list on the back including the Opening of the Year, New Year's Day, Full and Half Moon Festivals, the Thoth Feast, and the Festival of Sokar.

The joy of these festivals was expressed through drunkenness and offerings of Nile water and perfume. How are you going to celebrate the New Year?

: Dicken’s Christmas Carol Book

Christmas Carol, published in 1843, tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, an old miser who is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come and is transformed into a kinder man. In this book, Dickens also popularized the phrase “Merry Christmas”.

This book is part of our Victorian Christmas trail which is available only until 6th January.

: Indian Village Model

Sadly, we know very little about this model of an Indian village. It has been stored for many years on a top shelf covered in plastic sheeting, largely forgotten. A bespoke case had to be made to be able to display it in our Explorers Gallery.

❄️ Would you like to learn interesting facts about Victorian Christmas? If so, then come to the Museum and follow our new festive Trail around the galleries!

Many of the things we think of as defining Christmas were first made popular by the Victorians. One man in particular, Charles Dickens, had a huge influence on our idea of Christmas. He inspired several aspects of it such as family gatherings, seasonal food and drink, dancing, games and a festive generosity of spirit. Can you find all the Victorian objects around the Museum?

🎟️ This trail is free with a valid Museum entry ticket.

: A Child's Chinese Silk Coat

This is a silk coat, on display in our Explorers gallery, made for a boy of the Manchu imperial clan of China and is about 120 years old. The Manchus became the rulers of China by right of conquest, establishing the Qing dynasty after deposing the previous Ming dynasty in 1636.

🎨 week continues and today's theme is !

The Museum does not actively collect works of art, an area more comprehensively covered by Abbey, but it does hold some interesting watercolours one of which shows Napoleon Bonaparte in the Bay. With Napoleon being the topic of many discussions thanks to Riddley Scott's new film, we thought we would show you some pieces from our collections connected to this French emperor and military leader (Napoleon, not Riddley Scott!)

🖼 Portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte published for the Proprietors of the European Magazine in September 1821.

🖼 Bust of Elizabeth Rowe in Carrara marble by Lorenzo Bartolini who is regarded as one of the most important early 19th century sculptors. Napoleon Bonaparte was his great patron. Bartolini was the quasi-official portrait sculptor to the Bonapartes.

🖼 Torquay Harbour with Napoleon aboard the Bellerophon 1815. This view, probably from the 25th July 1815, shows Torquay Harbour teeming with visitors boarding small boats. Out in the Bay, a small flotilla lay siege to the Bellerophon which holds Napoleon Bonaparte, Torbay’s first tourist attraction.

🖼 Can you find Napoleon visiting his tomb?

29/11/2023

📓 Day 5 of the week is dedicated to all things and what could be more special than the internationally important archive of one of the founders of the Museum, William Pengelly, related to his work at Windmill Hill cave in Brixham.

Early cave exploration was often haphazard, with little recording of what or where objects were found. Pengelly created an entirely new technique by applying the disciplines of mathematics and geology to the excavations of local caves. Excavating layer by layer, he recorded each find in place, determining its position from a fixed point. Each block or 'prism' was given a unique number, which was then given to every object found in that prism. His resulting explorations were unparalleled in their thoroughness and his techniques continue in principal to this day. Because of this, Pengelly holds a unique place in the history of archaeology in Britain.

In 1858 Pengelly began work to end Buckland’s antediluvian (before the biblical flood) theory. The discovery of a pristine cave at Windmill Hill in Brixham, provided the opportunity to resolve the question of the association of humans with extinct animals. The resulting excavation allowed his newly developed excavation technique to be used for the first time. Everything was meticulously recorded in excavation notebooks.

In September 1858, Pengelly and Falconer presented their findings which showed clearly the association of human and extinct species, proving for the first time, anywhere, the true ‘antiquity of man’. The Museum holds 13 original manuscript notebooks and correspondence books, photographs and loose pages of exploration notes relating to the Windmill Hill excavation, along with excavation diaries and notebooks for the exploration of Kent’s Cavern. The notebooks have been recently digitised for Prof. Mark Write of Durham University.

As an archive relating to the nineteenth-century scientific exploration of caves, it is without comparison among British archaeological archives.

📜 Week 2023 is finally here and it's packed with interesting themes that we will explore together.

🗺 We will kick things off with ! In 2006 the Museum acquired the ‘Secret Archive’ of Col. Percy Harrison Fawcett, a Torquay-born explorer. The archive contains the remarkable story of one family’s obsessive search for a lost civilisation in the Brazilian rainforest. It has inspired an international bestselling book ‘The Lost City of Z’ and a Hollywood film of the same name. Over 500 documents, logbooks, diaries and cuttings record a remarkable life of exploration and remain the only means to truly understand this remarkable story.

On display in our Explorers Gallery can be seen Fawcett's diary from the 1920-1921 expedition which includes detailed maps and a secret location of ’Z’ as well as comparative texts that Fawcett thought might have been Atlantean in origin. Also displayed is his theodolite compass found in 1933 which has been recently kindly adopted. Explore Your Archive
