No booking necessary to visit Newton Abbot Museum. We are a free museum for you to visit for a few minutes to a few hours. There’s always something new to see! At the start of every month we put a new o

bject of the month on display, and update the photo wall (next to the lift). Please note that to ensure the safety of our volunteers and visitors we may ask you to wait before starting your visit if the museum is busy.

🤔 Have you booked your tickets for our Special Make & Create yet? We'll be playing with clay and talking about the Kingsteignton Figure!

In 1867, a mysterious wooden figure dating back to the Bronze Age was found by a clay worker at Zitherixon Quarry, near Kingsteignton. For 2,400 years, it had been preserved within the waterlogged ball clay of the Bovey Basin.

The Figure is now on display at RAMM (Royal Albert Memorial Museum) in Exeter. Taking it as our starting point, this informal, hands-on workshop invites participants to explore its story through making and imagination. What might its missing arms have looked like? What was the landscape like 2,400 years ago? And what can the Figure tell us about the place where it was found?

Working with clay, drawing and collage, we’ll explore connections between archaeology, landscape and local history, imagine new stories around the Figure, and think about how it might be displayed and its story told here in the Bovey Basin today.

📸 – Bringing our photographic archive online!

What if you could explore photographs from Newton Abbot’s past from wherever you are?

We’re excited to share that we’re working on a project to make more of our photographic archive available online through South West Collections Explorer. 🖥️📸

Our first import is planned for the end of this month, which means that soon you’ll be able to discover more images from the Museum’s collections online – like this wonderful photograph of Queen Street, taken around 1954.

Just look at all those details! From the cars and fashions to the local shops and Madge Mellor’s Café.

🎒 New display in our ‘Your Space’ Community Case!

This month, we’re taking a fascinating look at school attendance – and some of the unusual ways children were encouraged to attend school regularly. 📚🏅

The display comes from collector Paul, who spent over 25 years working in the Education Social Work Service. His collection of attendance reward cards and medals offers a glimpse into the history of education and the importance placed on regular attendance.

Paul says: “I find most people are not aware of the historic methods schools used to encourage regular attendance and I hope sharing my collection will give an insight into this fascinating world.”

🌧️ Looking for somewhere to escape the rain today? Come and spend some time at the Museum – there’s plenty to discover for the whole family!
