Today we celebrate the birthday of pioneering palaeontologist Mary Anning 🎉 A true trailblazer whose discoveries along the Jurassic Coast helped change our understanding of prehistoric life forever. Working from the cliffs of Lyme Regis in the early 1800s, Mary uncovered some of the world’s first scientifically recognised marine reptiles, including ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs, at a time when women were rarely acknowledged in science.
Her work laid the foundations for modern palaeontology, and her legacy continues to inspire fossil hunters and scientists today.
We’re excited to announce that our museum is currently creating a brand new display dedicated to Mary Anning and her remarkable discoveries, which will be unveiled at Telford Fossil Festival on the 6th and 7th June!
Join us as we celebrate one of the most important figures in the history of palaeontology. 🦕🦴
