#ThrowbackThursday to a glorious sight. Flying in this video is our Marmion flag - a blue and white vair design.
For nearly two centuries the Marmion family held Tamworth Castle. From 1100 – 1294 there were six lords and all but the last were named Robert.
Robert IV (1185 – 1218) who earned the title Robert the Justice was appointed Head of the Itinerant Justices of England, in effect acting as Lord Chief Justice. In 1215 he deserted King John while on campaign in France and sided with the French king. By royal command an order was given to punish Robert by seizing all of his lands, imprison his son Geoffrey and to demolish Tamworth Castle:
“Go without delay to the Castle for Tamworth and to hold and retain it. With all possessions, horses, arms and harnesses, so that he shall throw it down immediately” - December 30th 1215
It is thought this lead to the part destruction of the Sandstone castle keep. Shortly after King John’s death, peace was made between Robert’s sons and the Crown and they regained possession of their lands.
You can learn more about the families of Tamworth Castle on our website or by visiting us. We also display all our flags in the tower.

Today (15th September) is Battle of Britain day, which commemorates the air battle that took place during the long hot summer and early autumn of 1940.
🏰🛡️To tie in with Battle of Britain there will be an aerial Wargames session based on the actions that took place on that day at our Wargames event on Sunday 22nd September.
This event is fun for all and included in your admission price. You can get involved or just watch. Why not pay us a visit and let the games begin?
The session is run by Tamworth Games Club, using miniature figures on a table top terrain. The games club recreates battles and skirmishes from a number of different periods – Roman, Early Medieval, Napoleonic and World War II. #BattleOfBritain #OTD
