Swan pie anyone? 🦢🥧
(Don't worry, it's not real 😅)

Today is National Pie Day and no one loved pie more than the Tudors! They loved to eat all sorts of meat pies and also liked to show off their wealth by having stunning centre pieces such as this on their dining table. For a roast swan recipe, the bird was often "redressed" in its skin and feathers after roasting so it appeared as it did before it was cooked!

You can find many culinary delights in our grand dining room and ante-chamber.

Throwback Thursday to February 2024 and the geophysics investigation of the bailey area.
Areas locally known as ‘The Dell’ (which is next to the herringbone wall) and also the lower and upper lawns - grassed areas near the bandstand - were surveyed with Ground Penetrating Radar.

❓What did we find?
The Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey was successful in characterising the below ground remains across the bailey. Interpretation of the data has confirmed the presence of anomalies (including negative features and remains of a structural nature), at various locations within the landscape. Hopefully we can secure funding to investigate these sites further. 🤞
You can read the full GPR report on our website here: https://www.tamworthcastle.co.uk/archaeology

🏰 Did you know that the medieval heritage of Tamworth can be viewed under your feet as you cross the historic Ladybridge and walk towards Tamworth Castle?

🌉 Six carved flagstones in the carriageway across the bridge illustrate Tamworth's Anglo-Saxon history from 600 AD to the Norman Conquest. The flag stones are arranged in a timeline so that the centuries pass as you walk towards Tamworth town centre.

We are delighted to announce the successful completion of another phase of essential conservation work at Tamworth Castle. This phase focused on the area around the castle entrance, addressing concerns to preserve the integrity of this iconic landmark. With scaffolding and hoarding now being removed, the castle’s beautiful façade is once again ready to welcome visitors and the community alike when we reopen on 1 February.

Tamworth Castle has stood proudly in the heart of our town for over 900 years, a symbol of resilience and a connection to our shared history. As a community, we have a collective responsibility to care for this treasured site, ensuring it remains a source of pride and inspiration for generations to come. Conservation is an ongoing journey, and with such an ancient structure, repair work is an important part of safeguarding its future.

We are now preparing for the next phase of restoration, a continuation of our commitment to preserving this cornerstone of Tamworth’s heritage. To the people of Tamworth and all who hold this castle dear, we thank you for your support and understanding as we work to protect this extraordinary piece of history that belongs to us all. Together, we can ensure that Tamworth Castle continues to inspire, educate, and stand as a proud symbol of our community’s rich heritage.

Great to see another piece of local history and craftsmanship restored to its former glory. This is just one of many incredible stained glass windows in St Editha's Church - they really are worth popping in to look at. We're sure this will be an enlightening talk.

Thursday, 30th January, 7.30pm!

The "Friends of St. Editha's" are delighted to invite you to a drinks reception and talk to celebrate the recent restoration of the south aisle window.

The window has been in a "parlous state" for many years but has now been restored to its original glory by specialist craftsmen, thanks to the generosity of the "Friends" and others.

Enjoy drinks and nibbles plus a special talk about the windows at St. Editha's - some of the finest stained glass in the UK.

Tickets £6/£5 for "Friends of St. Editha's" members (pay on the door) - all welcome!

Season 12 of 'Digging For Britain' has just dropped on iplayer. You can view it all online now or wait for each episode on BBC2: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0026rh6/digging-for-britain-series-12-1-saxon-gold-and-buried-coins

This latest series kicks off with some great Anglo-Saxon finds. Not quite the Staffordshire Hoard - which you can see items from in our Anglo-Saxon exhibition - but very exciting to see a whole sword unearthed.
We do love a good archaeological dig (and would love to be on this show with Alice Roberts !) Our previous digs have unearthed some great historical features like the castle mill but where should we dig next?

The most incredible grave goods ever found on Digging for Britain, a strange Roman sarcophagus filled with plaster and an intriguing medieval coin hoard.
