🥃🐂Wishing all a Bliadhna Mhath Ùr when it arrives!

Oidhche Challain or New Year’s Eve was once the most important winter festival in the Highlands.

'Gillean Callain' - the Hogmanay Lads – would gather in a group, one lad dressed in the hide of a bull, complete with horns and hooves.
They would climb onto the thatched roof of a traditional cottage and run around the edge in a clockwise direction to perform the ancient custom of 'deiseal'.

The lad dressed as a bull would shake his horns and hooves and the others would hit him with sticks, chanting the ‘Duan Challainn’ – Hogmanay Poem.

Afterwards, they would recite another poem at the cottage door, thanking the occupants and eagerly awaiting their hospitality.

They would usually celebrate together with feasting and drinking and the man of the house would singe the animal hide to signify purification and celebrate a Happy New Year... Bliadhna Mhath Ur!’
