Blackmuir Wood is Strathpeffer's immediate escape route into the trees.
๐ŸŒณIt's a low-key walk with attractions along the way, perfect for nature and geology lovers to refresh themselves before or after a visit to our museum! ๐Ÿ›๏ธ
Watch out for the old curling pond by the car park, explore the Touchstone Maze, learn about the Iron Age hill fort, look out for wildlife and the wooden statues.
๐Ÿฟ๏ธ
The Touchstone Maze is at the end of the walk, with over eighty rocks laid out as a labyrinth for you to explore, it's an unusual feature and the stones show the range of different rock types which make up North Scotland. ๐Ÿชจ

Did you know that we have lots of comic books and magazines in our collection? ๐Ÿ›๏ธ๐Ÿฆนโ€โ™€๏ธ

When you think of comics, perhaps superhero ones like Batman, Wonder Woman and Spider-Man spring to mind, but Scotland boasts lots of classic comic characters like The Broons, Oor Wullie, Desperate Dan and Dennis the Menace. ๐Ÿ’ฌ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿ’ญ

Our Trustee Pamela, who can often be found manning the museum reception or rounding up a school visit for us, took a break with The Beano recently. ๐Ÿ“–

Comics can be a real gateway into reading, with the fun and approachable format encouraging reluctant readers to enjoy storytelling. Plus, you learn how to analyse images, symbols and text together, which builds modern media skills. ๐Ÿ’ซ๐Ÿ’ฃ๐Ÿ’จ

It's woof, woof! โค๏ธ๐Ÿถ

Dogs truly are human's best friends. Perhaps you were lucky enough to have a family dog to play with growing up, or maybe you had a teddy like this scruffy one to hug instead. How cute is he?!

Did you have a favourite dog growing up? Was it a real-life bestie or a character from a book, TV show, or film? ๐Ÿพ From classic storybook favourites like Spot and Hairy Maclary to beloved screen stars such as Bluey, Gromit and 101 Dalmatians, dog characters and stories have entertained so many families with their adorable antics!

We're having a competition on our Instagram stories to see who the best cartoon dog character from children's TV shows, films or books is - voted by you! Follow and visit us there to cast your vote.

There are several historical sites to see in Strathpeffer for history lovers, including a Pictish stone... Only a 5 minutes walk-away from us is the Eagle Stone or Clach an Tiompain in Gaelic. It dates back to over 1,500 years ago and has a horse shoe-like symbol above an eagle on it. ๐Ÿฆ…๐Ÿชจ

For today we wanted to share this stone's prophecy by the Brahan Seer. He predicted that if the stone fell three times, the surrounding valley would be flooded, and the stone used as an anchor. It has since fallen twice, and is now set in concrete.

If you're thinking of visiting us or Strathpeffer more generally, itโ€™s an easy walk from the Old Station and is surrounded by greenery, making it a nice detour!

For we're sharing this very cute, vintage paper doll set. We particularly love the nightgown and candle accessory, which is giving Wee Willie Winkie vibes. ๐Ÿ•ฏ๐Ÿ‘—Who remembers playing with some of these? ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

For , we thought we'd do a classic post with these two epic shots of our beautiful corner of the Highlands - Strathpeffer. ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ

The sepia photo is from a postcard in our collection and clearly shows The Highland Hotel, opened in 1911 to accommodate visitors drawn to the Victorian spa town's mineral springs.

The coloured photo is just from this summer, so you can see not too much has changed and we love how we're still surrounded by lots of greenery. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿฅฌ๐ŸŒณ

๐Ÿ’ญ ... In the UK, some left-handed people were historically forced to use their right hands? Some were even punished if caught using their left hand! In some Scottish schools, a tawse (a thick leather strap with one end split into tails) was used. Often called "the belt" or "strap," it was struck across the palm of a student's hand. Ouch! ๐Ÿฅฒ Nowadays, thankfully, that is no longer practiced.

During childhood, when you begin to learn how to use lots of everyday tools, being left-handed can cause confusion or discomfort. Scissors, can-openers and desks are designed for right-handed people, making certain tasks more challenging. โœ‚๏ธ

However, even though left-handed people make up only about 10% of the population, studies find that they tend to score higher when it comes to creativity, imagination, intuition, rhythm and visualization! Thatโ€™s why a lot of artists and musicians tend to be left-handed! ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿฅ

So, if you're left-handed, 13th of August is for you, as it's ๐Ÿซฒโค๏ธ
