Let’s take a closer look…

Our conservator wanted to take a more detailed view of this artefact (a card case from the Spalding Gentlemen’s Society collections) to assess which cleaning agent to use.

Dating from the late 18th to early 19th century, this card case was made using a traditional Kashmiri papier-mâché technique, which was typically used to manufacture small boxes. This process involved moulding and drying the case before it was ornately hand-painted. Then several thin layers of clear lacquer were added.

From its earliest days, Spalding Gentlemen's Society has collected ‘curious’ things and established an important library and archive.

Today, we aim to connect members, visitors and the wider public with the world through interactive engagement with our collections. We believe that curiosity, discovery and the search for knowledge can and should be nurtured and open to all.
