The Collection contains documents, photographs and recordings relating to the history of Southam, its people and surrounding area.

The Collection consists of over 10,000 historical items specifically relating to the town of Southam in Warwickshire, England. These are looked after by volunteers, who share their local knowledge and skills to help preserve, research and display some of them in exhibitions. Monthly local history articles are written and history books published.

🧩 REVEAL WEDNESDAY: THE MYSTERY SOLVED! 🧩

Did you recognize the imposing courtyard from Monday's photo?That striking structure was the old Southam Workhouse, which famously stood on Welsh Road West

Here is the true history behind this poignant and historic local landmark:

A Harsh Reality: Built in the late 1830s under the New Poor Law, this sprawling complex was designed to house the local area's most destitute, elderly, and vulnerable residents, operating under very strict, self-sufficient conditions.

The Landmark Bell: That distinctive white bell tower cupola rising from the roofline was a central part of daily life, used to ring out strict timetables for meals, work duties, and curfews.

Evolution of the Site: Long after its days as a workhouse ended, parts of the building served as a local hospital and public utility space before the old structure finally vanished from our skyline to make way for modern redevelopment.

With millions of men away fighting, the Women's Land Army stepped up to run the country's farms. These ladies performed grueling, essential agricultural work all around the Southam area to keep Britain fed.

The Clues in the Clothes: Those distinctive, practical collared shirts on the left were a key part of the official Land Army uniform, designed for long days of heavy labor out in the Warwickshire fields.

🗺️ IF THESE STREETS COULD TALK: THE 1926 SOUTHAM TIME MACHINE 🕰️

Let’s play a game. Imagine you are walking out of Tithe Place right now, but the moment you step onto the pavement, the year flips backward exactly 100 years to a Tuesday morning in 1926.

The modern cars vanish. Instead, the steady clack-clack of horses and carts echoes down the road, mixed with the chug of an occasional steam wagon.

If you looked around the town today, here is what your morning would look like:

🌾 Look Up: You can still see the massive timber sails of the old Southam Windmill silhouetted against the sky on Welsh Road West. They won't be demolished for decades.
