The British Motor Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of historic British Cars; it boasts over 400 cars which span the classic, vintage and veteran eras. The Museum building is a spectacular piece of architecture with an art deco design, whilst the Collections Centre building is a modern contrast. Together they stand proudly in a beautifully landscaped setting of 65 acres, which rolls

out onto the Warwickshire countryside. THE MUSEUM STORY

The Museum opened in 1993 as the amalgamation of the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust’s preserved car collection. The Trust decided that the car collection and artefacts were outgrowing its then two locations, Studley in Warwickshire and a museum in Syon Park in London. A dedicated purpose-built residence was needed to give the collection pride of place and open for public viewing. It was the Trust’s mission to keep the memory of the British motor industry alive and to tell its story to all, starting from the beginning of the 20th Century to present day. So a building was designed that not only housed the cars and its extensive motoring archive, but also had educational and conference facilities thus ensuring its sustainability. The Heritage Motor Centre, as it was first known, opened in May 1993.

“Why would Pressed Steel want to make a Mini out of plastic?”

2026 marks a century since Pressed Steel (which you may also know as Pressed Steel Fisher) was founded. Despite their name, the car body manufacturers of Oxford had been looking into alternative bodywork materials, including plastic, from at least the 1960s.

Our Assistant Archivist has recently been hard at work processing our Sydney Horwood papers, a collection of records and photographs from one of Pressed Steel’s own designers and researchers. This collection is now fully catalogued and available to access in the Archive.

The race isn’t over yet… 🛞

It’s been a great summer at the Museum, with lots of Forza Horizon fun to enjoy, but there’s plenty more to come! Forza Horizon 6: The Experience will be running on the Mezzanine Gallery until the end of November, so you’ll have loads of chances to immerse yourself in the action.

We’ll continue to launch new Forza Horizon 6 wristbands every month until then too, so don’t miss your chance to claim yours! If you visit on National Video Games Day on 12 September, you’ll even have the opportunity to secure an exclusive teal wristband, available for one day only, while enjoying a host of other activities to celebrate the occasion!

Summer has reached its end, but we’re keeping the Gaydon Gatherings going!

Get ready for the first of our Autumn Gatherings, coming NEXT WEEK on Tuesday 8 September. At this free celebration of all things motoring, anything goes! Whether you drive a car, motorbike, truck, van, tractor and more, your wheels are welcome at the show.

Visitors can enjoy a special themed menu, offering a taste of India, and a new Collections Spotlight car, courtesy of the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust, which you will be able to watch taking a drive around the site! Which car will be coming out this month? You'll have to wait and see...

Primary STEM Careers Days are coming! ⚛️

On 13 & 14 October, we’re teaming up with Playground Games to bring these action-packed days for KS2 school students, to give the games developers, engineers and scientists of the future a taste of the opportunities STEM can offer them.

Each day features hands-on Archive workshops, trails, Museum tours, an interactive gaming‑industry talk and time in the ‘Forza Horizon 6: The Experience’ exhibition, including the opportunity to play on the gaming simulation rigs, all included in the price of admission.

£9.50 per student.

If you love trucks, the Museum is your happy place this weekend! 🚛

On 5-6 September, the Retro Truck Show will be hosting a huge range of display vehicles, spanning all the big names in trucking, from DAF to Volvo. Inside the Museum, there's also a Indoor Model Show and trade area, to complete your ultimate trucking weekend.

What an incredible summer it's been at the British Motor Museum!

From grandparents sharing nostalgic stories of their first cars to young enthusiasts discovering iconic British designs for the first time, welcoming so many families through our doors has been the highlight of the season.

It was fantastic to take part in the Great British Summer Savings scheme this year. Joining this national initiative gave us a brilliant way to open our doors even wider, helping us connect generations and make Britain’s rich motoring heritage engaging and accessible for everyone. If you'd like to take advantage of our £1 Child Tickets, you have until 1 September, so don't miss out!

CarFest comes to Silverstone this weekend, and the Museum’s team has been hard at work out in the rain getting our very own 1963 Rover BRM Le Mans gas turbine ready to head out to the event!

The BRM will be exhibited in collaboration with British Racing Motors in The Tech Lab, a zone dedicated to inspiring the next generation of innovative engineers through immersive experiences - a key focus for the Museum. Fitting, for the first gas turbine car to complete the 24 Hours of Le Mans way back in 1963.

Beginning in 2012, CarFest has become the UK’s biggest family fundraising and motorsports festival. Over the last 14 years, it has raised over £27 million for a range of children's charities across the UK. This is CarFest's first year at Silverstone, and the organisers expect the weekend to be bigger than ever!

If you’re attending CarFest, visit The Tech Lab and see the BRM for yourself! Our friendly volunteers will be on hand to answer questions, alongside the team from British Racing Motors, who are also bringing their P15 V16 (Open Wheel class) and P351 (Closed Wheel class). Both will feature in Grid Shows and Track Shows across the weekend - don't miss your chance to see these incredible vehicles in action.
