Baptist Church, High Street, 1985. The remains of the fire station tower are still present in front of the house that was called The Lawn, although we believe the Fire Station had moved to St Michael's Road by this time. (Photo SHM Archives 1985)

Today is International Museum Day!

Established by International Council of Museum (ICOM), International Museum Day (IMD) is an annual event organized since 1977 to highlight the role of museums in cultural exchange, education, and fostering mutual understanding and peace among communities worldwide. In 2026, the theme โ€œMuseums Uniting a Divided Worldโ€ emphasizes the potential of museums to bridge cultural, social, and geopolitical divides, promoting dialogue, inclusion, and peaceful coexistence.

While the KAS does not have a museum of its own, we are proud to support a number of museums throughout Kent through promotion on our social media channels, advice and identification from our curator & archivist, and partnership projects as we've carried out with Maidstone Museums and Faversham Fleur de Lis Museum.

If you work or volunteer at a museum in the Ancient County of Kent do get in touch with us about how we may be able to promote your work, collections and events.
