There is one painting in the gallery that seems to stop people in their tracks.

Sue Campion RBA’s Spring Lane has quietly become a favourite this week, mine included.

Interestingly, several visitors have commented that it has a touch of David Hockney about it. Once they said it, I could see it too. It brings to mind his iPad drawings of the Yorkshire landscape and later the Normandy series. Not because it imitates them, but because it shares that same joy in the changing seasons, colour and the rhythm of the landscape.

Created in pastel on paper, Spring Lane has a freshness and immediacy that is incredibly engaging.

On a day like today, it’s hard not to wish you were dipping your toes in the water.

We are delighted to have just received a very special new sculpture by Halima Cassell MBE.

“Crystalline”

Bronze, Edition of 8

Halima Cassell is one of Britain’s most celebrated contemporary sculptors. Her work is held in major public and private collections around the world and she continues to receive widespread institutional recognition. This year, her work features in exhibitions at Tate St Ives, alongside the story of Barbara Hepworth’s life and legacy, as well as at The Hepworth Wakefield, further cementing her place as one of the UK’s leading sculptural voices.

Inspired by the intricate geometry found within crystal formations, Crystalline explores the natural order, symmetry and internal strength of mineral structures. The sculpture captures the moment where nature and mathematics meet, transforming solid bronze into a form that feels both architectural and organic.

Cast in a highly sought-after edition of just eight, this remarkable work is now available to view at Soden Collection.

A meeting of past and present.

This summer, visitors to the Shrewsbury Arts Trail will have the opportunity to see two remarkable paintings exhibited side by side at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery.

Ian Rayer-Smith’s monumental painting, Where Overtime Settles (480 x 220cm), has been created in direct response to An Ancient Stronghold in France by Wynford Dewhurst (1864–1941), often referred to as the “Manchester Monet” for his role in bringing Impressionist ideas to Britain.

The conversation between these two works, separated by more than a century, is a fascinating one. It demonstrates how great art continues to inspire new generations of artists, each bringing their own perspective, experience and visual language to familiar themes.

It has been a real pleasure to work alongside Shrewsbury Arts Trail, Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery and Ian Rayer-Smith to help make this exhibition possible. At the Soden Collection, we see our role as extending beyond sales. We are passionate about creating opportunities to inspire, educate and connect people with art, and collaborations such as this are an important part of that mission.

Both Ian and the gallery have been involved with the Arts Trail since its inception, so we are delighted to be working together once again in 2026.

Alongside this museum exhibition, we will also be presenting a collection of smaller works by Ian Rayer-Smith throughout July and August at the Soden Collection, many inspired by the wider Impressionist movement.

We hope you’ll take the opportunity to visit both exhibitions this summer.

There is something incredibly powerful about restraint.

Halima Cassell MBE’s Shards are born from the same language that runs through her larger works — geometry, rhythm, tension — but here the gesture is distilled. Reduced. Refined.

Each shard feels as though it has been broken from something monumental, yet it stands alone with complete authority. Angular. Precise. Almost architectural. The surface catching light and shadow in ways that shift as you move around it.

What we love about these works is the balance they hold — strength and fragility, fracture and control. They are not fragments in the literal sense, but explorations of form pushed to its edge.

Halima has spent decades mastering the discipline of carving into clay with mathematical precision. The Shards feel like a continuation of that journey — intimate in scale, monumental in presence.

It’s easy to stand back and take in the whole. The composition. The balance. The gesture.

But the real conversation often happens in the details.

In abstract painting, details aren’t decorative — they are evidence. Of time. Of decisions made and unmade. Of layers concealed and revealed. A small shift in tone, a scraped-back surface, a line that almost disappears… these are the moments where the artist’s thinking lives.

With Ian Rayer-Smith’s paintings, it’s in these quieter passages that something opens up. What at first feels resolved begins to breathe. The surface holds movement, hesitation, memory.

Abstract work asks us to slow down. To look closer. To notice.

The Breakers Yard looks at places on the edge of usefulness — spaces where labour, memory and material quietly overlap.

Presented by The Soden Collection (1–31 March), the exhibition brought together a focused group of new paintings exploring working environments, overlooked sites, and the quiet poetry of functional spaces.

Through a restrained palette and careful observation, Louis Wootton-Davies captures places shaped by use rather than display — spaces that carry traces of human presence without ever centring the figure itself.

The exhibition launched online and in-gallery throughout March, with all works available for purchase.

We’re proud to have shared Louis’s quietly powerful perspective on the built world — finding beauty in the ordinary, and meaning in the worn edges of work and time.
