A new memorial bench will be placed on the Abbey Green, close to Sherborne Abbey and overlooking the War Memorial.

The location has been chosen to provide a permanent year round place of quiet reflection dedicated to our service men, women and their families past, present and future.

It is a joint initiative between the Sherborne & District Branch of the Royal British Legion and Sherborne Town Council, with cooperation from Sherborne Abbey.

The design includes armed forces personnel, a war horse, a nurse, an ambulance, and poppies, with the inscription “Lest we forget”.

Funding for the bench came from RBL fundraising, supported by the town council.

The memorial bench will be dedicated on Saturday 27th June 2026 at 1000.

Everyone is welcome to come along to the Abbey Green for this short ceremony, which will be conducted by Reverend Martin Lee, Rector of Sherborne Abbey. In attendance will be The Mayor of Sherborne along with other distinguished guests from both the town and The Royal British Legion.

On Monday, 18th May 2026, Councillor Suresh Jeganathan was inaugurated as the new Mayor of Sherborne during a ceremony held at Digby Hall on Hound Street.

The event was well attended by local businesses, community organisations, councillors, and staff.

In addition to Councillor Jeganathan’s appointment as Mayor, Councillor Richard Crabb was elected Deputy Mayor for the coming year.

We extend our sincere gratitude to outgoing Mayor, Councillor Jill Warburton, for her dedicated service to the town during her tenure.
