For Refugee Week 2026, we’re sharing a new online exhibition exploring stories of people who have made North Craven home.

The exhibition looks at moments from the First World War through to the present day, including Belgian refugees welcomed in Settle, wartime evacuees, prisoners of war who worked on local farms, and more recent stories connected with Ukraine and Craven Refugee Support Network.

It’s a thoughtful reminder that movement, welcome, uncertainty and new beginnings have all formed part of local life here in North Craven.

How many lives can one building have?

These two photographs show the same building at 21 Duke Street in Settle, but in very different eras.

The first image from the Horner Collection shows the premises as the Halifax Building Society. The second shows a much more recent chapter, when many local families will remember it as RePlay Toy Cavern.

What fascinates us is not just the building itself, but all the stories in between.

Did you have your first savings account here? Do you remember visiting RePlay? Were there other businesses in the building between those two periods?

We're also intrigued by the neighbouring property visible on the right-hand side of the older photograph. Today it appears to be a house, but in the historic image it seems to have a shopfront with a distinctive bay window.

If it's tasty homemade soups, seasonal salads, freshly prepared sandwiches, yummy breakfast rolls, afternoon teas, delicious homebaking or just a catch up with friends you are wanting, the Folly is the place to be.

We have a selection of gluten free and vegan menu options and homemade gluten-free and vegan scones.
Our produce is locally sourced, bread from Seasons bakery Ingleton our meat from Drake and Macefield butchers, many of our fruits for baking and salad items are grown by our volunteers. Our Coffee and speciality teas are from Atkinsons Coffee Roasters of Lancaster. Our beers come from North Riding Micro Brewery based in Snainton near Scarborough.

Our building is looking a little worse for wear at the moment from the outside, but you will still receive a warm and friendly welcome inside.
We have baby changing facilities and we are dog friendly too.

This Wednesday evening in Austwick Parish Hall. Take along your fossils for identification.

What do bears, sharks and English folklore plays all have in common?

They all feature in our talk next week!

Come along to Austwick to find out more about famous fossils and fossil hunters of the Yorkshire Dales. There will be fossils for you to have a closer look at, and please feel free to bring along any of your own for identification.

This talk is a collaboration with the Museum of North Craven Life (The Folly Museum and Coffee House, Settle).

Do you remember taking your savings to school?

This certificate from The Folly Collection was awarded to the Settle C of E School Savings Group in recognition of forty years of voluntary service to the National Savings Movement.

For much of the 20th century, school savings schemes encouraged children to put aside a few pennies each week. Pupils could collect stamps or make small deposits, gradually building up savings while learning the value of budgeting and planning ahead.

For many families, it was often a child's first introduction to saving money.

Did your school have a savings club? Do you remember taking coins to school, collecting savings stamps, or being trusted with your savings book?
