Exhibitor of the Month: Barbara Hibbart – Glass

Born within the sound of Bow Bells, Barbara Hibbart moved to Surrey before her first birthday and grew up in Worcester Park with her two brothers. Her father’s long stretches at sea with the Merchant Navy left a lasting imprint: Barbara inherited his deep love of water, swimming, and the need to be near the coast. Home was lively, full of pets, tree frogs and slow worms, nurturing her fascination with nature and flowers.

Barbara studied Human Psychology at Aston University, taking a year out to work with epileptic children before completing her degree in 1978. Her early career in childcare included demanding roles in remand homes for girls in tough areas of London, before moving into administration roles, then training, coaching and events management. She later ran her own business as a trainer and coach, working with charity CEOs and developing personal skills programmes.

Marriage and then daughter Hannah brought her to Sussex, to a home filled with arts, crafts and costumes. Community minded, Barbara became a school governor, a local councillor and Chair of the local Playschool. The family eventually settled in Heathfield, closer to the sea and with space for chickens, vegetables and flowers — all continuing sources of inspiration.

Glass arrived unexpectedly. A chance encounter at a craft fair led to a fused glass workshop gift, followed by a jewellery class that changed everything. Barbara immediately recognised glass as the “missing link” connecting her creativity, love of nature, training experience and desire for tangible results. She bought her kiln in 2017, ran her first workshops in 2018, began exhibiting, and later published her first book.

Her influences include Dale Chihuly, the sea, flowers and natural textures. Today she creates jewellery, pictures, seasonal decorations, garden stakes, waves, seascapes and evolving 3D pieces — always driven by curiosity, colour and the joy of making something she can hold and say: “I made this.”
