Ros Lymer’s lovely paintings often emerge from a blend of observed and imagined forms within the landscape, drawing inspiration from objects found in woods and along the shoreline—shells, stones, roots, shadows, and negative spaces. She is particularly attentive to the linear rhythms of fence posts, the stubbly markings of harvested fields, and the intricate cracks that thread through cliff faces and walls.

These natural and man-made details become starting points for her exploration of shape, texture, and pattern. Through her work, Ros reveals the quieter structures held within the land, transforming subtle visual cues into contemplative compositions that balance observation with imagination.

Linda Lethem is both a painter and printmaker, with a strong foundation in drawing and photography. Her work develops from a combination of sketchbook studies and extensive photographic material gathered wherever she goes. Back in her Sussex studio, she often paints, draws, and prints simultaneously, using each medium to inform and extend the others as ideas evolve.

She is fascinated by the way a single starting point can unfold in unexpected directions, with prints, drawings, and paintings each offering different pathways of exploration. Although her work may begin from one idea, it develops organically into something far less predictable—an unfolding process she describes as central to the essence and magic of being an artist.

We're delighted to be showing the ceramics of our guest artist, Hella Keevil. Working from her studio in Kent, Hella creates hand-built ceramics inspired by walking, travel, and a lifelong fascination with texture, colour, and form. Her distinctive pieces are deliberately tactile, with richly textured surfaces that invite touch and encourage a closer connection with the work.

A member of the Kent Potters Association and the Royal Tunbridge Wells Art Society, Hella regularly exhibits throughout the region. Working predominantly in stoneware, Hella explores a wide range of clays, from fine porcelain to heavily grogged black bodies, often combining different materials within a single piece. Hand-building is central to her approach, offering freedom, spontaneity, and a strong sense of movement, while wheel-thrown forms are frequently altered, carved, and reimagined.

Living close to Ashdown Forest, Hella draws continual inspiration from the landscape around her. Walks through the changing seasons provide a rich source of imagery, texture, and atmosphere that find their way into her work. Through her ceramics, she captures a sense of place, curiosity, and discovery, creating pieces that celebrate both the tactile qualities of clay and the beauty of the natural world.

We love showing Steve Jowitt’s wonderful paintings. Beautifully stylised and minimalist, his work is characterised by flat areas of colour, clean geometry, and carefully simplified forms. Architectural elements are distilled to their essentials, giving each composition a graphic, almost illustrative quality that prioritises mood and design over realism.

The restrained detail and absence of figures create a sense of stillness and quiet contemplation, inviting the viewer to pause and engage with the scene. At the same time, Steve’s bold yet softened colour palette brings warmth and accessibility to the work, balancing clarity with atmosphere. Working predominantly in acrylic on canvas, Jo values the medium for the flexibility and depth it offers, allowing her to explore themes and capture not only what she sees, but also what she feels. She is passionate about sharing her work with a wider audience and invites viewers to join her on this voyage of discovery.

Themes often develop across a series of paintings as Jo seeks to capture the beauty of a subject from different perspectives. Dreams and landscapes intertwine throughout her work, creating evocative compositions that blend reality with imagination in a style of gentle, light surrealism.

We're delighted to welcome painter Clare Buckle as a guest artist to the Chalk Gallery. Clare is a Sussex-based artist from the north east of England, engaged with landscape subjects such as industrial structures, monumental buildings, suburban streets and the relationship between built and natural worlds.

With a heightened sensitivity to colour influenced by her experience of having synaesthesia, she is interested in using colour to express mood and atmosphere, often varying colour within a print series.

Her paintings and prints, while arising from an autobiographical perspective, ask broader questions. How do we decide what is beautiful or meaningful? Can we find solace or significance in spaces considered utilitarian or ugly? And how might they be a metaphor for the self, echoing human concerns such as history, memory, and ageing?
