Despite arriving late for a live interview, I made it! With roads closed, an accident and more roadworks, reaching Meridian 1 wasn’t easy this morning! However the lovely Emma Cooper put me at ease and we talked clay, mindfulness and business… I wonder how different it would have been if it were scripted?? Anyway, too many erms and repeated phrases, but really good to experience community radio… I’ll become a regular now! Next workshop… I’m so excited - I know I didn’t build it and I know it’s not mine, it’s Eileen Harte Psychotherapist but still, I get to run a mindful clay workshop here!

The yurt is a beautiful setting for my evening of calm, holding the perfect energy…

A wonderful Friday evening… a relaxing introduction to kurinuki, a Japanese clay technique requiring patience, care and precision. Come and join hiro ceramics at Eileen Harte ‘s yurt in Finchingfield, Essex on Friday 18th September from 6:30-9:30pm for a mindful candlelit clay experience.

We’ll begin by simply holding the clay. Breathing, arriving, then we scoop - slowly, patiently - the clay you remove from one pot becomes the next form. A small family of vessels, made together.

There’ll be ceremonial cacao, quiet conversation, and no rush…

Your pots go away to be fired. They come back as something to keep, an anchor, if you’d like one, for something you want to carry forward.

This is genius! It was designed as a mother daughter thang and became a travel compendium! What a way to capture memories using environmental print! Such a fab holiday game too… rather than sharing photos at the end of a day, leading thru a sketchbook is so much more nourishing!

You can even create depth by over stamping 😜 My collection so far has been hiro ceramics but my travel kit will now live in my bag so I can curate the rest of my life 🤪

Which leads me to… community… I’m so grateful to my growing network and the joy they bring me, so wherever I can I want to promote them. You’ll be seeing more of this 😉 Another thing tho - we need to be using word of mouth so screens become a little less prominent in our lives. I battle a bit with insta and facebook but they seem to be essential for my business… If I do disappear occasionally from insta, you know where I am from my website calendar, (sign up to my newsletter) Come and see me at fairs and I’ll recommend more fabulous makers! Right, I’m back in the studio this week… lots of stock to replenish. Thank you to EVERYONE who has supported me so far this year, customers and makers alike, you’re amazing!

My wonky shelf showed off some new work… have a look see…

Reference the size on the previous photo - This planter sold before I had a chance to capture it! The free writing was ‘journaled’ and flowed all the way round, inlaid with Vulcan black clay. I was a bit chuffed with this and will begin making a few more this week.t

These hirokku pears are a progression from the single ones… when placed in a group, they become a conversation and inlaid words describe their containment. What would you have written on a set of three?

Who doesn’t like a fridge magnet! These came from my hiro branding and came about because I wanted a hiro circle card, once again these are inlaid with Vulcan black clay.

And the little oven dish is enjoying serving salads and slaw in this hot weather!

Moss is a fascination for many, it can supplant the lure of clay when people book my workshops.

If you need to forage for moss, look in shady, damp spots: the base of walls, roof tiles, pavement cracks, tree bark, and woodland floors. It’s best gathered after rain, and only ever take a little from any one patch, leaving plenty behind to keep regenerating.

Not all moss behaves the same way once potted; some prefer to cling to rock or bark rather than sit in soil. Good ones for mosspots:

• Bryum species — common on soil, walls, and disturbed ground; forgiving and easy to establish
• Ceratodon purpureus (redshank moss) — tolerant of poorer, drier soil; common on paths and open ground
• Tortula muralis (wall screw-moss) — good if your pot gets a bit more light, tends to cope with drier spells better than most

Cushion-forming mosses generally do better in a pot than the flatter, sheet-forming types, which prefer to spread over a solid surface like bark or stone.

Robin Wall Kimmerer has written a beautiful book called moss, I recommend the audible version since her voice is mesmerising - thank you Nancy Hughes for the recommendation!

Caring for moss
• Mist, don’t drench moss drinks through its surface, so a light daily spray (morning or evening) does more than heavy watering
• Move it out of direct sun even shade-tolerant moss will bronze and crisp in extreme heat; a shaded windowsill or dappled spot is safer
• Don’t panic if it browns moss is remarkably resilient and often revives with consistent moisture even after looking crispy
• Rainwater over tap water if you can moss is sensitive to the chlorine and minerals in tap water, so let the gas evaporate for 20 mins

If lime scale occurs, due to the pot being unglazed, you can sand or scour it off easily

Another product story for you… these hirokku pears translate as hillocks! I discovered the shape for these one stem vases early on and found them sitting conversing with other pears quite happily! The words echo my journey at the moment as I balance my growing business with home life and a changing body…

For me, this time in life is contemplative, pensive, meditative; it’s about finding presence, holding space but fluidly… working out the bits of life that work and the areas I need to change. Those zen lines are the path that steadies me…

There’s lots to let go, those who know me well are probably as aware as I am of those nuggets! I’m working on them 😉 I’m fortunate to be someone who loves life, be it up or down; I thrive on these contours and enjoy growing into the energy I become as I constantly find space…

I seem to have adapted the Japanese way of kurinuki to suit my way of expressing something sculpturally. This is how a hirokku pear starts life… a heavy form that gets halved…

…and hollowed…

Rejoined and spiralled with spiralling zen lines. After stamping messages, they get inlaid with Vulcan Black clay.

They’re left to dry, and chat!

And cleaned up before being fired. It’s a delicious process and one that will evolve. It’s where I’m at now… I hope three will find a home together but if one resonates with soul, i’ll let it go! Or take commissions with the words of others. Right now they’re liking the lavender…
