The Heong Gallery at Downing College opened in February 2016 as a new gallery for exhibitions of modern and contemporary art. The Gallery was designed by Caruso St John Architects (winners of RIBA Stirling Prize 2016) and so named in gratitude for the generous benefaction of Alwyn Heong. FREE ADMISSION

A beautiful evening last night in The Heong Gallery listening to Realf Heygate perform ‘Beaming’. Unfolding as a live collage of sound in response to the Ten Good Years exhibition, the piece used tape-looping analogue processes to trace connections between time, place and the people who inhabit them.

The performance was followed by a fascinating Q&A with Realf & exhibition curator

We’re excited to have artist Realf Heygate (aka flaer) in The Gallery in person today. He is currently setting up for his performance tonight and we were delighted that he is accompanied by this little abstract cardboard form. Derived from navigating the Penwith landscape in Cornwall, that inspired the Painting ‘Kite’ which is included in ‘Ten Good Years’, which in turn has influenced ‘Beaming’ – the live sound piece that he will perform tonight!
In dialogue with the exhibition, ‘Beaming’ will trace connections across time, place, and the people who inhabit them.

Congratulations to Soheila Sokhanvari on being recipient of this year’s prestigious David & Yuko Jada Art Foundation Grant. So very well deserved!

We were proud to exhibit her work in our 2023 exhibition’We Could Be Heroes’ and love this photo of her outside The Gallery with the exhibition poster 😍💪

Thanks so much to Jennifer Johnson who gave a fascinating and sold out talk on ‘Thinking In the Abstract: British post-war art and ideas of abstraction’ in The Gallery on Friday evening.

Beginning with a discussion of works by Wilhemina Barns Graham and Peter Lanyon, currently on display in our ‘Ten Good Years’ Exhibition, it was fascinating to hear her explore the development of abstraction in the period and its legacies in the contemporary paintings also on display, in the shadow of the works themselves.

Thanks also to Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust who generously funded this event, and to Rachel Coombes for hosting.

This fabulous painting by William Scott is currently on display at Kettle’s Yard in conjunction with our 10 year anniversary exhibition.

Why not combine a trip to see it at the Kettle's Yard House with a trip to our own beautiful Gallery at Downing College.

It was great to host when he interviewed the wonderful Ai Weiwei recently for The Times and Sunday Times. They talked politics, Hockney & buttons!

NOW OPEN! at Downing College, Cambridge, is ten years old!

Our new exhibition ‘Ten Good Years’ celebrates the gallery’s anniversary by paying homage to its inaugural exhibition ‘Generation Painting 1955–65: British Art from the Collection of Sir Alan Bowness’, reshowing work from Bowness’s collection alongside contemporary artists.
