How about a pair of medieval boat (cog) bookends.
Perfect for any room, these ones have been cast without pigment, so you could paint them if you wanted to.
I also have a pair cast with slate dust, so they're grey.
Available to buy from me or the Sandwich Medieval Centre.

The Nicholas has returned to the Sandwich Medieval Centre after a summer of hull repairs.
A massive thanks to Richborough Marine Ltd - Dry Docking for looking after us, we could not have done it without their support, help and expertise.

Over the next few months we will be continuing the deck repairs and caulking before starting on the stern castle.

Don't worry we will be cleaning the cover soon.
Massive thanks to Andy for the drone shots

At the start of November, the Sandwich Medieval Centre was honoured to welcome Admiral Sir George Zambellas GCB, DSC, ADC, DL, and Lady Amanda Zambellas. Admiral Sir George Zambellas had been officially appointed as the new Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports at a ceremony in Dover earlier that week in succession to Admiral the Lord Boyce, patron of the Trust, who died in November 2022.

During the visit, the couple learned about the activities of the Centre, including medieval arts and crafts, and the Trust’s work on building a replica medieval cog, the Nicholas, currently in dry dock in Richborough.

Clearly interested and most impressed by the Centre’s work, the Lord Warden commented that he very much looks forward to a return visit.

We had a fantastic day today in the medieval kitchen making

Tartys of Applis (forme of Cury recipe 1390) which is an apple pie sweetened with pears figs and raisins. We added some fresh walnuts too

Apple dumpling. We used up the rest of the pastry by stuffing an apple and baking it in pastry.

Carved turnips - the fore-runner of the pumpkin and the original Jack O'Lantern based on Irish folklore tale of stingy Jack - dating back hundreds of years.

We also made soul cakes (no pictures).
Little flat cakes cooked on a griddle which were given to 'soulers' in the medieval period at this time of year for all souls' day These would be for children, the needy and the poor who would call at your house and say prayers to help get your loved ones out of purgatory in exchange for a cake.

Massive thanks to all of our fantastic reenactors, volunteers, and visitors who made today another brilliant day at the centre.

Our next cooking demo day will be Saturday 14th December for a Christmas feast.

Tomorrow, Sunday 27th we will be cooking up a feast in celebration of all saints day. Come along and see our wonderful f...
