On this day in 1666, Samuel Pepys recorded in his diary that King Charles II was wearing a vest. Pepys described this new garment as ‘a long cassock close to the body, of black cloth, and pinked with white silk under it, and a coat over it…’

We have a number of waistcoats in our collection including this black 18th century waistcoat. It has 4 front pockets, is lined in white silk with purple and beige stripes, and has 6 silk covered buttons, plus an extra buttonhole for a watch chain.

The Museum will be closing at 1pm today (Thursday 15 October) so we can welcome St Mary's Primary School for a visit to explore Prehistoric Royston.

When the historian W. B. Gerish arrived in Hertfordshire in the early 20th century, he discovered a county rich in curious folk tales and enduring local beliefs.

Our next talk from Matthew Platt, brings Gerish’s findings vividly to life, uncovering the strange, the supernatural, and the unexpected. Hear of witches said to have sown fear and chaos across Royston, a beloved giant who fought on behalf of the poor in Baldock, and many more extraordinary tales.

Emma had lots of fun this afternoon with Year 1 at Meldreth Primary School. We played with lots of different toys before putting them on a timeline. Plus, the children made their own thermatropes.

Come and create your own handmade cards for Christmas, whilst enjoying a glass of Cava and meeting new people. This workshop provides all the materials to make a few cards using paper craft techniques, such as pop-ups and collage.
