Rutland County Museum is proud to be part of this year’s Open Studios, celebrating the creativity and talent of artists from across the region.

From Saturday 22 August to Sunday 20 September, visitors can enjoy discovering art at the museum alongside its fascinating collections and exhibitions.

Our museum shop is filled with beautiful handmade gifts, each one created by a talented local independent maker.

David is a ceramic artist whose work you can find at Rutland County Museum.

After running an antiques centre for many years, David discovered a passion for pottery. He now creates a range of both practical and quirky ceramic pieces from his home workshop, transforming a simple lump of clay into colourful bowls, vases and unique decorative items. While pottery requires plenty of patience, David finds the creative process incredibly rewarding.

Next time you're visiting the museum, take a look in the shop to browse David's unique pottery and discover even more handcrafted work by our local makers.

The Rutland County Museum archives are a real treasure trove of local history – a wealth of stories, records and hidden gems that bring our past vividly to life.

From family histories to centuries-old documents, there’s always something new to discover such as this Pen, ink and sepia wash painting of Edith Weston Church, Rutland by N Fielding which dates back to between 1790-1800!

Ana Garcia-Hall is a mixed media artist and jewellery designer based in Oakham, Rutland. The power of nature features heavily in her work, both literally and metaphorically, drawing inspiration from the local landscape, geology and Rutland's abundant wildlife. Specialising in unusual combinations of clay and textiles, Ana’s work has been exhibited and sold around the world, and she regularly undertakes commissions. Each piece is unique and entirely handcrafted, with an attention to detail that blurs the lines between embroidery and clay art.

A selection of Ana's artwork is available to purchase from the Rutland County Museum shop, making it the perfect opportunity to take home a beautifully handcrafted piece inspired by Rutland.

There's still time to book your place for our Space & Stars Family Planetarium Show on Wednesday 12 August at Rutland County Museum.

Join us for an exciting journey through the night sky as our pop-up planetarium brings space to life. Perfect for families and young explorers, this immersive experience is a great way to discover the wonders of the universe during the summer holidays.

There will also be a partial solar eclipse in the early evening on 12 August. Everyone attending Explorer Dome will receive a free pair of solar eclipse glasses, allowing them to safely view this incredible phenomenon.

Have you seen our wonderful collection of handmade items for sale at Rutland County Museum? They're all created by talented, local, independent makers!

Diane Lynch is one of these makers whose work is currently available in the museum shop.

Using flat pieces of glass and kiln firings of up to 800°C, Diane creates beautiful, vibrant fused glass artwork. Every piece is completely unique and the excitement of seeing each new creation emerge from the kiln is what keeps her creating. In Diane's own words, "I find it so addictive!"
