Another incredible piece from our collection and a glimpse into 17th-century cartography

Rutlandia Comitatus - a beautifully engraved map of Rutland produced by Johannes Blaeu in 1645 for Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, sive Atlas Novus. Hand coloured and featuring descriptive Latin text to the reverse, the county is intriguingly rendered as “Ruthland-shire.”

Part of the collection at Rutland County Museum in Oakham, dedicated to preserving the rich history and heritage of England’s smallest county.

This , we’re highlighting a remarkable hoard of 2,830 late 3rd-century Roman coins uncovered at Tinwell, Rutland, during a metal-detecting rally back in 1999.

Recorded as Treasure by the Coroner, the hoard was later acquired thanks to support from Arts Council England/Victoria & Albert Museum Purchase Grant Fund and The Friends of Rutland County Museum.

Rutland County Museum cares for more than 13,000 objects collected from across Rutland - from rural life and social history to fascinating local archaeology.

One remarkable piece is this Late Roman gold finger ring, featuring detailed male and female busts and decorated with beaded wire and gold globules. Dating from 200 BC–410 AD, it was discovered in Whitwell and purchased for the Museum by the Friends of Rutland County Museum.

If you’ve visited the old-style pub exhibit in Rutland County Museum, you’ll know you won’t be getting a proper pint there anytime soon…

Rutland CAMRA’s 13th Beer Festival returns from 26–28 June, bringing a full weekend of great drinks, live entertainment and community spirit.

With over 40 cask and keg beers, 10 ciders and perries, sparkling wine and a gin bar, you can finally enjoy that proper pint while soaking up the historic surroundings of the museum.

The festival will also be raising funds for this year’s charity, The Air Ambulance.

Everyone is welcome to come along and enjoy a fantastic weekend of beer, music, food and local entertainment in the heart of Oakham.

Have you ever wondered about the story behind the statue in our garden?

The figure depicted is Sir Jeffrey Hudson, who was baptised in Oakham on 14 June 1619 and became famous for his remarkably small stature. Said to have stood at just 18 inches tall as a young man, his extraordinary journey took him from Rutland to the court of King Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria.

For many years, the statue stood in the garden at Hudson Cottage before later being moved to Rutland County Museum, where it can still be seen today.

Then & Now: Oakham, Rutland

Once home to Furley & Hassan, a bustling general furnishings store serving Oakham’s community by horse and cart. The red-brick building still stands proud, a lasting reminder of the town’s rich past.

It’s amazing to see how much has changed… and how much has stayed the same!
