A systematic study of at-risk sculpted stones from the Kingdom of Northumbria, which stretched all the way across Southern Scotland to Whithorn, will be a welcome addition to our knowledge and appreciation of this period!

Some artefacts are considered "at risk" as they are in, or near, churches earmarked for closure and sale.

Next weekend, on 30th August, the beach at St Ninian's Cave is the venue for a pilgrimage that dates back not only 102 years to when pilgrimage was reintroduced in Galloway, but to the 8th Century crosses carved by pilgrims at the Cave. You can see original stones from the Cave at the Historic Scotland Whithorn Priory Museum as part of our site ticket, You can also get one of our free e-bike / cycling maps detailing all the Early Christian sites in the Machars at the Whithorn Trust visitor centre and be part of carbon neutral movement to Whithorn that is at least 1300 years old, perhaps older!
Please note the access to the Cave itself is currently restricted.
