Join us at the gallery on 10th October for the opening of ‘Gravity’ by Owen Pritchard.
This project sets sculpture against contemporary photographs of the human form, tracing how the body has been represented from chisel to lens. Pritchard began by photographing sculptures in museum collections, drawn to their stillness and the way they were lit. He then turned the same eye on real bodies and the processes undertaken by sculptors and cast makers. The “perfect” forms of sculpted bodies sit against the fallible, tangible forms of the people photographed, each throwing the other into relief. Gravity is the force that shapes both skeleton and sculpted stone, and it gives the project its title.
Owen Pritchard is a photographer, writer and critic based in Newport. He trained as an architect at Nottingham University and took part in the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale before moving into writing and photography. He has written for The Guardian, Blueprint, Icon Magazine, Apollo and The Architects’ Journal, and held editorial roles at It’s Nice That and Magnum Photos.
