(662)

The Great North Museum: Hancock opened in May 2009 and incorporates collections from the Hancock Museum, Newcastle University’s Museum of Antiquities and the Shefton Museum. Highlights of the museum include mummies from Ancient Egypt, a planetarium, a life-size replica T. rex dinosaur skeleton, a large-scale, interactive model of Hadrian's Wall, major new displays showing the wonder and diversity of the animal and plant kingdoms, spectacular objects from the Ancient Greeks and much more! The Museum also holds temporary exhibitions and a range of free events, from children's activities to lectures and evening events. Free entry.

Congratulations to Ellie Smith, age 11, who is our third
Atomhawk Design Ltd. drawing competition winner.

Atomhawk artist Martin Faragasso said: “I chose Ellie’s underwater creature because I saw a lot of originality which instantly immersed me with this ancient and magical being. With her notes I could see that a lot of thought was put into the ideation of her drawing. I tried to take a lot of her ideas and put them into practice with the lighting, pose and composition to give the feeling that there is a lot of history in this magical 100-year-old being.”

Well done Ellie!

The Great North Mouse

This week's museum story time, with Albany Mouse and Amy, is 'Monkey Puzzle' by Julia Donaldson. The Great North Mouse #MuseumFromHome

This week for museum story time Albany Mouse has chosen ‘Monkey Puzzle’ by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, from Macmillan publishing.

When the museum reopens why not come and visit and see if you can find some of the animals from the story? We have a Monkey family, Elephant, Snake, Bat, Frog and lots of Butterfly’s waiting for you to find them!

We are very much looking forward to welcoming you back to the Great North Museum: Hancock but in the meantime, grab a cuddly toy or a comfy grownup and enjoy the story!

The Great North Mouse

Join Albany Mouse and Amy for Museum Story Time on Thursday mornings! This week's story is Dear Zoo. The Great North Mouse #MuseumFromHome

On Thursday mornings Albany Mouse is usually welcoming some of our smallest visitors to the museum for our free under 5’s ‘Museum Mice’ sessions.

Since Albany cannot do this at the moment we thought we would instead do museum story-time videos for you to enjoy at home!

This week our first museum story time is ‘Dear Zoo’ by Rod Campbell, from Macmillan publishing. It is one of Albany’s favourites!

When the museum reopens why not come and visit us and see if you can find an Elephant, Giraffe, Lion, Snake, and Frog just like in the ‘Dear Zoo’ story. In the meantime you could have a go at drawing your favourite story animal. If you do, Albany Mouse would love to see some of your creations in the comments below!

We hope you enjoy the story video and look forward to welcoming you back to the museum in due course. #MuseumFromHome #FamilyFriendlyMuseum @MacmillanKidsUK

#fossilfriday #fossilvertebrate #fossil #Adelosaurus #palaeontology

This specimen represents the fossilised remains (minus the skull) of the Late Permian vertebrate Adelosaurus huxleyi, NEWHM : G26.49. The fossil was found during the 19th century in the fossil-rich Late Permian Marl Slate of Midderidge, County Durham. It was first described in 1870 by Albany Hancock and Richard Howse, and more recently in 1988 by Susan Evans of University College, who observed that the creature is lying on its back, not its belly as previously described. As far as we are aware, these are the only remains of this creature so far identified; the fossil is more than 250 million years old.

The reconstruction of Adelosaurus shows what the creature may have looked like when it was alive - at that time County Durham was much closer to the equator than it is today.

Congratulations to Jack Craig, age 5, who is our second Atomhawk Design Ltd. drawing competition winner.

Atomhawk artist Axel Sauerwald loved Jack's cheeky troll character. "He looks like a little curious troll who marvels at even the smallest things he discovers."

Well done Jack and brother Lewis, who also created a fantastic troll character. Thank you.

We had nearly 300 entries to our Atomhawk Design Ltd. drawing competition. The artists have been at work and we can now start to announce some winners. We'll announce four in total over the coming days. Thank you so much to everyone who submitted drawings, they were all awesome!

Congratulations to Jessica Clarkson whose drawing captured the imagination of Atomhawk concept artist Josh Hutchinson.

"I chose Jessica's demon because even though I don't draw horror much, I actually love drawing creepy stuff. Jessica's concept jumped out to me with the intriguing face and costume of her character...I decided to embellish the costume with a little more gold and accentuated her silhouette at the shoulders to giver her an intimidating presence."

Apologies for the post about HS2 we mistakenly shared this morning. We've removed it and offer you this puppy instead.

My son visits this great museum at least once a week and when I seen the 'meet rex the dinosaur' tickets had all been taken I was gutted he couldn't go. I actually commented on that page how gutted we were. Then to find out that no-one was asked for their tickets when they got there has really annoyed me. As we could have just turned up.... Not a happy mummy!!
Fantastic to see one of our local museums supporting breastfeeding mother's. Well played Hancock!
The autism frendly/disability friendly mornings until 10.20 i gather, correct me if I am wrong, allowed children who did not have a disability and others into the place, when it was exclusively meant gor children with a disability. It is important for children with autism and others to have a quiet space that does not trigger their sensory differences and whom are already disadvantaged
