Looking forward to watching The Great British Dig tonight at 9pm on More4. They're in Benwell near the site of Condercum Roman fort. Our stone head of the god Antenociticus was found in a temple close by.

We call him the Geordie god because he does not appear at any other Roman site in Britain - only Benwell!

These bits of pottery are called ostraca. They were used when 'ostracising' people from the city.
Votes would be cast when people scratched the name of the individual they wanted banished into the pottery, which would then be counted up.

Happy birthday Segedunum Roman Fort & Museum 🎂 😁

This day, 20 years ago, Segedunum Roman Fort, Baths & Museum opened to the public. There had been plans to celebrate the anniversary at the Museum itself today, but due to the current situation, we’re taking the celebrations online and we’re inviting you to join in.

Were you there at the opening of Segedunum? We’d love to hear your memories and see any photos you have of the day. To get us started, TWAM’s Head of Programmes & Collections, Bill Griffiths, shares his memories of opening day in his blog. https://blog.twmuseums.org.uk/opening-segedunum-a-recollection/
