Why do we love Open Studios so much?
Perhaps it's curiosity. The chance to see behind the scenes. To peek into workshops, sketchbooks and half-finished ideas. To meet the people behind the work.
In a world where almost everything can be viewed online, there's something special about seeing where creativity actually happens.
But Open Studios and galleries aren't opposites. They do different jobs. One shows you where the work comes from. The other helps you see what it becomes.
In our latest journal post, we're exploring why both matter, and why artists, galleries and visitors all benefit from the relationship between them.
This weekend, as part of North Yorkshire Open Studios, we'll be opening some of the spaces behind Masham Gallery, with work by Charlotte Morrison, Ian Scott Massie and Josie Beszant.
And yes, there will be cake.

EDGELANDS opens this weekend.
Printmakers Jo Bourne, Janis Goodman and Angela Hall each explore places that sit between things — between town and countryside, nature and industry, memory and observation.
Woodcut, screenprint and etching offer three very different ways of looking at the landscape around us, from tangled hedgerows and overlooked corners to urban edges, allotments and pathways.
The exhibition fills our green room from 6 June – 31 July and we're looking forward to sharing it with you.
Open six days a week in the heart of Masham.

An exhibition doesn't arrive all at once.

There is work to collect, pictures to unpack, walls to rethink, frames to move three times before they finally sit where they belong. (Here's Ann dropping in to give her expert direction too!)

There are conversations about colour, sightlines and spacing. Prints balanced against one another. The inevitable moment when something that looked perfect on paper ends up somewhere completely different.

And then there is the chalk on the window, the flowers on the table, the final labels and the quiet pause before the doors open.

Edgelands is nearly ready. We're still adjusting a few labels and the website but it
Features the work of printmakers Jo Bourne, Janis Goodman and Angela Hall.

Opening this weekend and continuing until 31 July.

Alongside the exhibitions currently on the walls, there is also a substantial collection of work by Victoria Brookland quietly waiting behind the scenes at the gallery.
Drawn from many different years of making, the pieces range from smaller works to larger narrative paintings filled with the gothic atmosphere, symbolism and storytelling for which her work is so sought after.
Much of it will not appear online, and none of it is formally hung at present.
Instead, it exists a little more privately — available to view for those who ask.
There is something rather lovely about discovering work this way, slowly and in person, rather than through endless scrolling.
If you are visiting the gallery and would like to see it, we will be very happy to share it with you.

May has brought riverside walks, wandering visitors, familiar faces, conversations in the gallery, and that particular late-spring light that makes Masham feel especially alive.
Thank you, as always, to everyone who has visited, followed along, shared posts, or simply taken a moment to look slowly with us this month.
June is nearly here, and the gallery is already beginning to shift towards the next exhibition and the next season.
For now though — a quiet moment of gratitude at month’s end.

Edgelands
6 June – 31 July
A new exhibition with printmakers Joanna Bourne, Angela Hall & Janis Goodman exploring those spaces that exist somewhere between the rural and the urban, the tended and the wild.
Places where paths slip between hedgerows and housing, where nature reclaims edges and overlooked corners, and where beauty often lives quietly in the in-between.
Alongside the exhibition, the first two weekends of June will also see the return of Open Studios here at Masham Gallery, with the back rooms opening once again to show work by Josie Beszant, Ian Scott Massie and Charlotte Morrison.
There is something rather fitting about opening hidden spaces during an exhibition about thresholds, edges and discovery.

Final week to see our Great British Travel Posters exhibition here at Masham Gallery.
The posters themselves will still be available online afterwards, but some parts of the exhibition belong particularly to seeing it in person — the sketchbooks, preparatory paintings, working ideas, small details and conversations that sit behind the finished images.
It has been one of the quiet pleasures of this exhibition watching people recognise places, remember journeys, and begin sharing stories of their own.
There is something special about standing in front of work that was shaped slowly by hand and imagination before it ever became a finished print.
If you have been meaning to visit, this is the week.
