Back from my business trip and I couldn’t wait to get back to the paints! 🎨

I decided to stick with what I feel most comfortable with — loose landscapes.

With autumn gradually giving way to winter, I’ve tried to capture a bit of that seasonal change in this latest piece. 🍂

Hope you like it!😊

Another quick A5 sketchbook study to develop into a larger piece when I get back from my business trip. I’m beginning to overcome my fear of incorporating figures into my work. This one was inspired by the artist Tamsu Ozmen.

I’m away on a business trip at the moment, but I always take my travel paints and little A5 sketchbook with me to keep my hand in.

Here’s another couple of small figure studies that I might develop further into a larger piece when I’m back home. Always nice to squeeze in a bit of painting, even when I’m away! 🎨

So, I was just about to clean up after the weekend’s painting when I noticed I had quite a bit of unused paint left on my palette. I hate wasting paint, so I thought I’d put it to good use and knock out a quick little painting using whatever was left.

This one was inspired by the terrific artist Lois Morgaine, who shares some fabulous watercolour tutorials covering the basics for beginners and intermediate painters.

It’s a very minimal piece, but sometimes less really is more. I think it’s quite effective in its simplicity.

I hope you like it! 🎨

I was flicking through some of my recent artwork and came across this piece. I remember being pretty unhappy with the final result at the time, so I decided not to share it.

I’ve since taken another look, as I sometimes do, and viewed it with fresh eyes. After using an app to add a mount and frame, and placing it in a complementary setting, I actually think it looks pretty good!

It’s a little lesson I’m learning along the way. Sometimes we’re too close to our own work to appreciate it, and a different presentation can make all the difference. After all, art is subjective, and what doesn’t quite work for one person might be just the thing for someone else. 😊

Capturing light in two entirely different worlds

From a bright sunburst illuminating an open landscape and wetlands, to sharp contrasts of light cutting through a dark, hazy city street.

Which vibe do you prefer: the serenity of nature or the mood of the city?

I had a pretty productive weekend with the paints and managed to produce six paintings that I’m actually really happy with and would be more than happy to display. 😊

They’re all quite different, using different themes, styles and techniques, which is part of the fun for me — just experimenting and seeing where the painting takes me.

So, out of these final three of the six, which one catches your eye? I’d love to know! 🎨😊

Today’s piece follows on from yesterday with another moody winter sky and landscape.

I really like the simple, muted colours in this one. I think they give it a lovely, atmospheric feel.

I’ve used an app to place to show how it might look in a real life setting.

Hope you like it too, and thanks as always for following along with my paintings! 😊

So yesterday’s painting was full of colour and the promise of a beautiful day ahead. This latest watercolour is very much the opposite.

There’s something I really like about dark, brooding landscapes. I think there can be just as much beauty in the drama and atmosphere of a darker scene.

I hope you like it 😊

So, being Friday night, I thought I’d set up my little painting area and see what came out.

Well… I struggled! Three attempts in and I still hadn’t managed to produce anything I was happy with. I wonder if my fellow hobbyists feel the same sometimes?

I have to admit, I was pretty dejected and felt like I’d somehow gone straight back to those first clumsy attempts when I was learning.

But I thought I’d give it one last go — and it turns out I saved the best until last!

For this one, I decided to let go of the pressure I put on myself to always produce something “gallery worthy” and just paint more naturally, without overthinking it.

I’m really pleased with the result. Although I have to confess, the temptation to fiddle and add unnecessary detail was huge! 😆

Sometimes, it’s better to just leave things alone.
