@claredudeney Artist Residency is currently taking place @the.dot.project Nov 4 - 21 Dec. Clare is undertaking 7-weeks of intensive practice in the art of weaving. To accompany the weaving, the artist is presenting a new series of chine colllé paintings.

Since Clare's solo show with The Dot Project earlier this year, her practice has continued to evolve to encompass the art of weaving. The chine colllé paintings are made by ripping a sheet of bible paper, painting the pieces and fixing them back together, and in a similar vein the loom-woven works emphasis is directed on the way the interlocking ‘shapes’ and colour planes meet and touch. The weavings, although slow and meditative, emerge from a spontaneous action without pre-planning; the artist gradually twists coloured threads creating organic, curving shapes against the grid of the loom.
Rather than striving for perfection in a traditional craft sense, Clare uses the medium to communicate conflicting impulses, mapping subconscious thoughts and feelings, creating not only a work of art in the form of undulating, instantly coloured uneven patterns, but also an experience and a visual performance 〰️ For all artwork enquiries for Clare’s beautiful pieces please contact [email protected] 〰️

Opening May 7th - The Dot Project is pleased to present The Sun Comes at Dawn (Solis Occasum), the first international solo exhibition by Australian Artist @heath_newman 〰️ For all enquiries or to make an appointment to see the show please email: [email protected] 〰️
The Sun Comes at Dawn looks to explore the world of duality and the nature of the soul, where the light and the dark take roles in common archetypes from ancient myths to the circadian rhythm of life. As many a profound statement makes “the sun befalls night only to be awoken again in the morning”, and so the balance of life is restored. This concept is prevalent throughout ancient fables, stories and proverbs. Abstracting these concepts, Newman looks to create a subtext to the fables, a renewed dialogue between this world, and others, peeling back the veil to the world of ideas and journeying to a realm of reverie 〰️
Working with calligraphic “automatic writing” Newman is looking to create an esoteric language and a connection involving a unified understanding of the nature of reality. Each work suggests presence of a Myth, story or character in which the protagonist’s role was to connect wildness to human kind and the balance of light and dark. The works are a combination of legends and nature, taking their cue from Greco-Roman- Egyptian mythology exploring the personification of place, sentiment and actions 〰️

David Matthew King discusses why he returned to painting 〰️ ‘I returned to painting because I was facing a lot of questions in my life and not getting any answers. I was growing too cynical. Nothing seemed real anymore. Everything was digital. Everything was politics. One day I was walking through the Met and I realized the only things I believed in anymore were these objects in front of me. There was a refreshing physicality that couldn’t be ignored. It’s a luxury to walk through the Met on any given afternoon. I know that. But there’s something strange and desperate happening on the inside when paintings are all you believe in. I decided the only way I could continue was to surround myself with things I believe in’ 〰️ [installation view: VAGUE/VAGUE. 39, rue de Grenelle, Paris, France.] Xx.

David Matthew King discussing his relationship with colour in his paintings 〰️ ‘When I returned to studying color theory a few years ago I realized that I viewed color the same way I viewed myself--that is, I couldn’t tell how blue a blue was until I put it beside an orange or beside a violet. By itself, the blue had nothing to do with anything, but I was excited by the contrast and how it seemed to become something else in order to please or offend the other colors that entered the room. And then you realize that the whole world is like that--things seem to exist only in relationship to one another,
and if you have no relationships there is no light, which is to say there’s no color. So when people ask what my paintings are of and I say “People” I’m not being flippant or dismissive, I’m being sincere, which is often mistaken for being flippant or dismissive.’ 〰️ Our exhibition in collaboration with @prismegalleries VAGUE/VAGUE featuring the work of the wonderful David Matthew King is now open in Paris 〰️

'IN PAPER WE TRUST' opening Wednesday 26 July at @the.dot.project !! ‘In Paper we Trust’ will examine the initial working process of the emerging, mid-career, and established artists and how the start can be viewed as the finish. All works included are unique, and have been created for this exhibition or discovered directly from the artists studio archives.
The choice to expose the underdrawing in the finished work is a monumental decision not easily made. A sketch or doodle provides a fascinating insight into the artistic mind. The mental attitude is somehow a little freer when working on paper. There is not the same pressure of the frame, commanding a finished product, felt when working on canvas.

Paper’s plasticity engenders it as a suitable foundation for self-expression. The included works will cover a large breadth: abstract, figurative, and even conceptual pieces, as well as proposed sketches, text-based work, painting, drawing, prints and collage.
The gallery looks forward to seeing you to view some of the exciting works in this summer exhibition. 'IN PAPER WE TRUST' will also feature:

Emma Apicelli | Ellen Berkenblit | Judith Bernstein | Armin Boehm | Joe Bradley | Matthew F Fisher | Philip Hinge | Aaron Elvis Jupin | Koak | Tomasz Kowalski | Joel Kyack | José Lerma | Sharon Madanes | JJ Manford | Bruna Massadas | Robert Nicol | Nick Payne | Brad Phillips | Felix Francisco Quintana | Peter Saul | Peter Schenck | Ryan Schneider | Bailey Scieszka | Michael Swaney | Austyn Weiner | Rose Wylie
