Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery

Pitzhanger Manor was the country retreat of Sir John Soane, one of the most influential architects in British history.

Pitzhanger reopened in spring 2019 following a £12M three-year conservation project to return it to Soane’s original designs. Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery is a Grade I listed house and contemporary art gallery in Ealing, West London, designed by Sir John Soane in 1800 as his 'dream house'. Currently undergoing a major renovation project, Pitzhanger will reopen to the public in 2018 having undergone rigorous restoration and a renewal of our contemporary art gallery and grounds.

‘Clare Woods: Garden Without Seasons’ brings paintings, collages and screenprints into distinct areas across the contemporary galleries and historic manor. The character and scale of each space shaped the exhibition, allowing its different elements to remain separate while continuing to speak to one another.

As Clare Woods puts it, “It feels as though we’ve been able to make three exhibitions.”

After two fully booked Wild Plant Walks at our August Garden Party, Usma Shah returns to Pitzhanger for 'Trees and Teas of All Seasons' on Thursday 3 September.

Join her for a gentle evening walk through Pitzhanger and Walpole Park, learning to identify deciduous and evergreen trees through the seasons and discovering some of their traditional uses for food, medicine and everyday life. The walk ends with a selection of herbal teas inspired by trees and nature.

It’s a fitting companion to 'Clare Woods: Garden Without Seasons', where flora, still life and the natural world sit at the centre of the exhibition.

Alongside Usma’s walk, September’s Thursday Late offers another way to explore the natural world: a 6.30pm curator tour of 'Garden Without Seasons'.

Process is key to Clare Woods’s practice.

Woods begins with a photograph, drawn from a vast archive of found and personal photography. Once her ‘starter’ image is selected, she produces a line drawing which is scaled up using a projector and redrawn onto aluminium panels primed in white gesso.

Working flat on trestle tables, each panel is painted from above using oil paint, wet on wet, in a single session.

Collage follows painting. At the end of each painting day, Woods uses the leftover colour by painting pieces of paper. These are later cut and used in collages.

19–21 August: three days of FREE family play at Pitzhanger.

PlayWorks fills Pitzhanger’s front garden with giant blocks, boxes, branches, flowers, colourful fabric and all kinds of curious loose parts. Children take the lead, transforming them into dens, creatures, cities—or something entirely unexpected.

No instructions. No right answer. Just space to build, imagine and play.

Come and go throughout the day. Advance registration is recommended, but drop-ins are welcome.

In developing a new body of work for ‘Garden Without Seasons’, Clare Woods was drawn to the lingering presence of Sir John Soane and his legacy in the architecture and light effects of Pitzhanger, as well as thoughts of the collection that would once have been housed here. Woods was interested in a house preserved over time and how we are shaped by what has gone before us.

Her luscious swirls and strokes of paint, and collaged works, capture moments of luminescent beauty, where shadows often create an air of melancholy or foreboding.

For Woods, the idea of absence also runs through Pitzhanger Manor, with the building constantly reminding visitors of the presence of Soane through his unique architecture and light-filled spaces, although he has long departed.

‘Clare Woods: Garden Without Seasons’ takes the natural world as its central motif.

By responding to photographs of flowers and everyday items, Woods has created a new visual world of nature that lies between abstraction and figuration — both familiar and ambiguous — where forms are ever-moving through oil paint swirls.

The works act against the rapid flow of imagery that modern photography has enabled, allowing the viewer to consider scenes through a slower and more detailed approach.

Tomorrow: paint with spices, print with flowers and spend a summer evening at Pitzhanger.

Join us on Thursday 6 August, 3–8pm for our free Garden Party, created with Oitij-Jo Collective in celebration of South Asian heritage, creativity and community.

Drop in throughout the afternoon and evening to turn turmeric, cinnamon and paprika into paint, or use flowers and foliage to create colourful botanical bunting — adding your own piece to something that will grow across the Garden Party as the day unfolds.

Step into the gardens for our Wild Plant Walk and Tasting, discovering edible and useful plants growing around Pitzhanger, then stay for North Indian and Bangladeshi food in the Front Garden.

Our timed Wild Plant Walk places are now almost fully booked. Once they are gone, you are still welcome to come along on the day and join the walk where space allows, although we cannot guarantee a place.

One creative day can quickly become two. We often see children join us for a single Holiday Club workshop and leave asking when they can come back.

Several days of this year’s Creative Summer Holiday Club are now fully booked, but a limited number of places remain on selected workshops from 3–7 August.

Led by professional Artist Practitioners, each day gives children aged 7–11 time to experiment with materials, learn new skills and explore ideas inspired by nature, gardens and 'Clare Woods: Garden Without Seasons'.

Now open: 'Clare Woods: Garden Without Seasons'.

This summer, the bold, richly coloured paintings of Clare Woods RA are displayed throughout Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery.

Featuring 29 new and recent works — all created over the last four years — the exhibition brings together paintings, collages and prints, and takes the natural world as its central motif.

Hovering between abstraction and figuration, her paintings are characterised by fluid mark-making and deep hues. Woods’s luscious swirls and strokes of paint, and collaged works, capture moments of luminescent beauty, where shadows often create an air of melancholy or foreboding.
