8 HOLLAND STREET PRESENTS: ANIA REKAS

Ania Rekas is a Polish artist and designer based in London. Her work brings together small moments from everyday life, personal memories and imagined landscapes, often inspired by places and experiences that bring her happiness. These moments become her own contemporary Ikona: small sculptural images representing a story, a feeling, a person or a particular place.

For this new collection, Rekas draws inspiration from everyday experiences and small details that catch her attention: daily routines, moments spent with animals, imagined landscapes, childhood memories from the Pieniny Mountains in Poland. Some of the works come from real memories, while others begin with images from dreams or imaginary scenes that gradually become more abstract.

“I handbuild my pieces primarily using porcelain, which allows me to explore a wide range of textures, from soft and delicate surfaces to more expressive and intuitive marks.”

8 HOLLAND STREET PRESENTS: TEREZA HORÁČEK

Characterised by a combination of evocative colours, textured brushstrokes, fluorescent-orange backgrounds and loose washes, Tereza Horáček reworks and layers paint to combine painting techniques reminiscent of the Old Masters with gestural brushstrokes. Her pastoral scenes draw inspiration from Dutch seventeenth-century paintings and English eighteenth-century landscape painting. Broad meadows, swaying trees and expansive skies are recurring motifs within her work.

“When I paint, I am often thinking about Jacob van Ruisdael’s trees: moody, modest, grand, oppressive and hopeful. I am painting imagined landscapes that are familiar, yet timeless.”
