Please join us on Thursday, 25 June, from 6:30–8:30pm for the opening of our new exhibition, While It Holds.

Curated in collaboration with Susan Davis Susan Davis Art City Works ® , While It Holds considers landscape as a living archive—a place where memory, emotion, and experience are held within the natural world. Fields, flowers, gardens, and shifting terrains become spaces where histories accumulate like sediment, and traces of family stories, folklore, ritual, and lived experience remain embedded within the land.

The exhibition title reflects something briefly suspended: a moment of stillness before light changes, before a season turns, before something slips from view.

Towards the back of the gallery a final solitary figure is cocooned among a forest of silk trees. Suspended within these hazy landscapes and existing outside of linear time, this figure carries a mythic atmosphere. It draw on a symbolic language that suggests archaeology from a half-remembered cosmology.

Towards the back of the gallery, a miniature painting of a solitary figure invites you to weave through a silk forest of faint, translucent trees. These veils act as thresholds, drawing the viewer into an immersive environment where the boundary between self and landscape begins to thin.

Each is a stunning and alluring standalone piece. However, when paired together there is a beautifully intriguing dialogue that plays with the tension of looking and being watched.

The eyes of the ‘voyeur’ watch with quiet patience, while I have waited so long for you to look responds with palpable sense of longing. Within Vo**ur, there a subtle, hidden face within the composition that heightens this psychological interplay.

70 x 50 cm | 27.56 x 19.69 in

Departing from her signature green, Xanthe Burdett explores a paler and ethereal palette. Here, the skeletal structure of the figure appears as a network of winter branches, crowned with a burst of yellow Forsythia. Throughout the exhibition, boundaries between the human and the botanical dissolve, and the body is reimagined as a permeable field shaped by the processes of growth and decay.

Xanthe Burdett reimagines the body as a mutable terrain. Boundaries between the human and the botanical dissolve into a monochromatic verdancy, inviting a profound reconsideration of our own ecological intimacy.
