The present painting depicts Venus, who has fallen in love with the beautiful young Adonis, trying to stop her lover from departing for the hunt, fearing—correctly—that he would be killed. The jealous god Mars, who transformed himself into a wild boar killed his rival Adonis.

Venus, as if filled with foreboding about Adonis’s fate, desperately clings to her lover, while he pulls himself free of her embrace, impatient for the hunt. The goddess’s gesture is echoed by that of Cupid flying above behind a dove—a creature sacred to Venus, and a putti can be seen below trying to hold back Adonis from leaving.

The painting was commissioned by Carl Gustaf Tessin in Paris in 1729. The artist informed his patron that he had consciously chosen a vertical format, as this made the figures more impressive in “the grand style”.
