While exploring what can be considered Welsh imagery or iconography, Paul Eastwood became interested in how the Welsh language is represented through drawing, painting, and book forms.

In the Unreadings exhibition, Paul Eastwood’s work is presented in dialogue with historic works by modernist painter, poet and engraver David Jones, selected by Eastwood from the National Library of Wales.

Wrth archwilio'r hyn y gellir ei ystyried yn ddelweddaeth neu eiconograffeg Gymreig, daeth Paul Eastwood i ymddiddori yn y ffordd y cynrychiolir yr iaith Gymraeg trwy luniadu, peintio, a ffurfiau llyfrau.

Yn yr arddangosfa Unreadings, cyflwynir gwaith Paul Eastwood mewn deialog â gweithiau hanesyddol gan yr arlunydd, y bardd a'r ysgythrwr modernistaidd David Jones, a ddewiswyd gan Eastwood o Lyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru.

Now on show in Oriel Café!
Ffocws #8

This edition of the retail showcase features Bill Kneale, Emily Hughes, John Hedley and Susan Cantrill-Williams.

Bill Kneale paints impressionistic scenes inspired by the colour, rhythms, shapes and lines in our world, real and imagined.

Emily Hughes uses collograph printmaking to develop a closer connection to the quarry she grew up near, translating its textures and atmosphere through print.

John Hedley creates organic abstract works using oil paint with various types of gold and copperleaf layered on organically shaped pieces of native, naturally fallen wood.

Susan Cantrill-Williams draws inspiration from the dramatic landscapes and seascapes of North Wales, using inks and pigments manufactured from local minerals and organic dyes.

Ffocws #8

Mae'r rhifyn hwn o'r arddangosfa fanwerthu yn cynnwys Bill Kneale, Emily Hughes, John Hedley a Susan Cantrill-Williams.

Mae Bill Kneale yn peintio golygfeydd argraffiadol wedi'u hysbrydoli gan y lliw, rhythmau, siapiau a llinellau yn ein byd, go iawn a dychmygol.

Mae Emily Hughes yn defnyddio printiau colograff i ddatblygu cysylltiad agosach â'r chwarel y magwyd hi yn ei hymyl, gan gyfieithu ei gweadau a'i awyrgylch trwy brint.

Mae John Hedley yn creu gweithiau haniaethol organig gan ddefnyddio paent olew gyda gwahanol fathau o aur a dail copr wedi'u haenu ar ddarnau o bren brodorol, naturiol wedi'i siapio'n organig.

Mae Susan Cantrill-Williams yn tynnu ysbrydoliaeth o dirweddau a morweddau dramatig Gogledd Cymru, gan ddefnyddio inciau a pigmentau a weithgynhyrchir o fwynau lleol a llifynnau organig.

30/05/2026

Presented in Unreadings, Paul Eastwood's drawings emerge from his examination of text within historical painting, particularly medieval speech scrolls used to depict religious verse. These works raise questions around access and legibility, considering who could read them and who they were intended for. The artist explores this tension between visibility and readability, treating text as both image and language within the drawings.

The drawings also explore reading through a dyslexic perspective. Letters are compressed and partially concealed, and words are fragmented or merged. Here, Eastwood reflects on the instability of his reading process "where hesitation, pattern recognition, and visual shape all play a role" (Disability Arts Cymru).

Unreadings is open Tuesday to Saturday, until 20 June.

Wedi'u cyflwyno yn Dad-ddarlleniadau, mae lluniadau Paul Eastwood yn deillio o'i archwiliad o destun o fewn peintio hanesyddol, yn enwedig sgroliau lleferydd canoloesol a ddefnyddir i ddarlunio penillion crefyddol. Mae'r gweithiau hyn yn codi cwestiynau ynghylch mynediad a darllenadwyedd, gan ystyried pwy allai eu darllen a phwy yr oeddent wedi'u bwriadu ar eu cyfer. Mae'r artist yn archwilio'r tensiwn hwn rhwng gwelededd a darllenadwyedd, gan drin testun fel delwedd ac iaith o fewn y lluniadau.

Mae'r lluniadau hefyd yn archwilio darllen trwy safbwynt dyslecsig. Mae llythrennau wedi'u cywasgu a'u cuddio'n rhannol, ac mae geiriau wedi'u darnio neu eu cyfuno. Yma, mae Eastwood yn myfyrio ar ansefydlogrwydd ei broses ddarllen "lle mae petruster, adnabod patrymau, a siâp gweledol i gyd yn chwarae rhan" (Disability Arts Cymru).

Mae Dad-ddarlleniadau ar agor o ddydd Mawrth i ddydd Sadwrn, tan 20 Mehefin.
