Discover the ideas and processes behind DARCH’s work this September!

Heaven in the Ground is an installation and immersive soundwork, which reflects the artist's diasporic connection to Wales, underscoring its importance as a compassionate and culturally rich land. It brings together their Somali, Indian and Welsh cultural heritages, merging folkloric traditions to create new ecological rituals which challenge colonial narratives of death, decay and exploitation of land.

Gain a deeper understanding of how and why DARCH created Heaven in the Ground, directly from the artist themselves, at our upcoming events below:

Dewch i ddarganfod y syniadau a'r prosesau y tu ôl i waith DARCH y mis Medi hwn!

Mae Annwn yn osodiad ac yn waith sain trochol, sy'n adlewyrchu cysylltiad diasporaidd yr artist â Chymru, gan danlinellu ei phwysigrwydd fel tir tosturiol a chyfoethog yn ddiwylliannol. Mae'n dwyn ynghyd eu treftadaethau diwylliannol Somali, Indiaidd a Chymreig, gan uno traddodiadau gwerin i greu defodau ecolegol newydd sy'n herio naratifau trefedigaethol o farwolaeth, pydredd ac ecsbloetio tir.

Enillwch ddealltwriaeth ddyfnach o sut a pham y creodd DARCH Annwn, yn uniongyrchol gan yr artistiaid eu hunain, yn ein digwyddiadau sydd i ddod isod:

Fugitive II (Morning Glory)

Within Brown Notes, two seven-metre emergency ladders, enclosed by safety cages of the kind fixed to institutional buildings, rise towards the gallery’s skylight.

A morning glory climbs their rungs a little further each day. Each deep-purple flower opens and dies within a single day. This accelerated cycle echoes crip time — a bending of the imagined healthy lifespan — while the vines, holding onto whatever they can find as they climb, recall the delicate systems disabled and Mad people build in order to keep living.

Rafael Pérez Evans' Brown Notes traces fugitive routes through failed care. This work depicts another escape route, this one towards the sky.

Fugitive II (Morning Glory)

O fewn Nodiadau Brown, mae ysgol argyfwng saith metr wedi'i hamgáu gan gawell diogelwch, o'r math sydd wedi'i osod ar adeiladau sefydliadol, yn codi tuag at ffenestr to'r oriel.

Mae gogoniant y bore yn dringo ei risiau ychydig ymhellach bob dydd. Mae pob blodyn porffor tywyll yn agor ac yn marw o fewn un diwrnod. Mae'r cylch cyflymach hwn yn adleisio amser crip - plygu'r oes iach ddychmygol - tra bod y gwinwydd, gan ddal gafael ar beth bynnag y gallant ddod o hyd iddo wrth iddynt ddringo, yn dwyn i gof y systemau cain sydd wedi'u hanalluogi a'r bobl wallgof yn eu hadeiladu er mwyn parhau i fyw.

Mae Nodiadau Brown gan Rafael Pérez Evans yn olrhain llwybrau ffoaduriaid trwy ofal aflwyddiannus. Mae'r gwaith hwn yn darlunio llwybr dianc arall, yr un hon tuag at yr awyr.

Last chance to see In the Window: Wayne Clark!

Wayne makes work with the firing in mind, creating marks in the clay and producing simple forms with the intention of catching the ash from the fire. At sustained temperatures in the kiln, the ash turns to glaze, which pools as it runs over the piece.

Working with a mixture of crank and other stoneware bodies with additives of Ruabon red clay and coarse sand, Wayne then uses various ash and shino glazes as well as vitreous slips.

Discover Wayne’s collection of work, from large sculptural pieces to smaller functional pieces, on display at Siop Mostyn until 31 August.

🎬 On Making “Sownd”

Manon Awst and Dylan Huw’s exhibition for Wales in Venice is titled Sownd, a Welsh word meaning both “stuck” and “structurally sound”. This reflects the project’s focus on fragile, shifting environments and the resilience found within them.

The work is informed by research into peatlands in Wales. By connecting these sites with Venice, the artists highlight shared ecological challenges and the ways places hold and transform stories over time.

The short film On Making “Sownd” is showing in our upstairs gallery until 3 October.

🎬 Ar Wneud “Sownd”

Mae arddangosfa Manon Awst a Dylan Huw ar gyfer Cymru yn Fenis yn dwyn y teitl Sownd, y gair Cymraeg sydd hefyd yn golygu “cadarn yn strwythurol”. Mae hyn yn adlewyrchu ffocws y prosiect ar amgylcheddau bregus, newidiol a’r gwydnwch a geir ynddynt.

Mae’r gwaith wedi’i lywio gan ymchwil i fawndiroedd yng Nghymru. Drwy gysylltu’r safleoedd hyn â Fenis, mae’r artistiaid yn tynnu sylw at heriau ecolegol a rennir a’r ffyrdd y mae lleoedd yn dal ac yn trawsnewid straeon dros amser.

Mae’r ffilm fer Ar Wneud “Sownd” yn cael ei dangos yn ein horiel i fyny’r grisiau tan 3 Hydref.
