In ancient Roman times the day before the Solstice celebrated the ‘dies natalis’ (birthday) of Summanus the god of nocturnal thunder. Round cakes called summanalia, made of flour, milk, and honey, shaped as wheels were offered to Summanus as a token sacrifice.

This , we’re highlighting a remarkable hoard of 2,830 late 3rd-century Roman coins uncovered at Tinwell, Rutland, during a metal-detecting rally back in 1999.

Recorded as Treasure by the Coroner, the hoard was later acquired thanks to support from Arts Council England/Victoria & Albert Museum Purchase Grant Fund and The Friends of Rutland County Museum.

The Archaeology of Leicester Market by Joseph Peters

Archaeological excavations at Leicester Market have uncovered over 2,000 years of history. Site Director Joseph Peters will present key discoveries from the excavation, ranging from a 4th‑century Roman coin hoard to evidence of the market’s first medieval covered building, dating to the 15th century.

Object of the Month: June

We're excited to bring you our brand-new Object of the Month feature where members of the Jewry Wall team share their favourite objects from the Jewry Wall collection.

For June, Louise has chosen this beautiful fragment of Roman painted wall plaster, dating to around **AD 150**.

Found at the Blue Boar Lane Roman townhouse in the area of modern-day Highcross Street, this piece gives us a glimpse into the colourful interiors of Roman Leicester. The decoration had to be carefully painted onto wet plaster, meaning the artist needed to plan the design in advance and work with incredible precision.

🏛️ Before the Holiday Inn... there was Roman Leicester.

This fascinating 1950 photograph shows the Jewry Wall and the remains of Roman Leicester before the modern Holiday Inn and surrounding developments transformed the area.

The Jewry Wall is one of the largest surviving pieces of Roman masonry in Britain, dating back nearly 1,900 years. These excavated foundations offer a glimpse into the baths and public buildings that once stood at the heart of Roman Ratae Corieltauvorum — the settlement that would eventually become Leicester.

It's incredible to think that beneath the modern city lies a history stretching back almost two millennia.
