Augustus planned multiple invasions of Britain (34, 27, 25 BC) but never carried them out. Julius Caesar had previously attempted invasions in 55 & 54 BC, but these also did not result in conquest. The actual Roman conquest of Britain began in 43 AD under Emperor Claudius.

In August of 55 BC the Roman general, Emperor Julius Caesar invaded Britain. He brought two Roman legions with him, travelling north winning several battles against the Britons, Celtic tribes in south-east England but decided to turn back and returned to France leaving Britain unconquered.

For this we're highlighting this beautiful example of a Roman mosaic found from Stibbe in Leicester back in 2017! The individual tesserae are making a beautiful pattern in the border of this mosaic.

Walk the very footsteps of ancient history with our next - Exploring Roman Connections!

📅Saturdays 15 + 29 August, 2.00pm

Join us on this walking tour which starts at Leicester Cathedral and ends at Leicester's oldest church of St Nicholas, as we unearth a wealth of Roman connections.

Led by knowledgeable guides, aside from taking in both sites, you'll learn about the city's history and how the Romans influenced its development.

Accompanied children under 16 free.
