Follow the timeline through the Museum to discover how the unique highland landscape was formed. Find out about the Picts and their beautiful carved stones, the world-wide links of medieval Inverness, and the importance of Gaelic language and culture. Upstairs, the story continues with displays on the Stuarts and Bonnie Prince Charlie, traditional music, the stunning Inverness silver collection, a

nd the modern city of Inverness. The Highland Photographic Archive held within the Museum is responsible for preserving and cataloguing negatives and photographs from all over the Highlands, and making them accessible to all. The archive is now home to well over 100,000 negatives and prints which relate to most areas of the Highlands, with the majority from Inverness and the surrounding area. The Museum's Art Gallery has a vibrant programme of temporary touring exhibitions featuring local, national, and international art and craft. The museum also has a beautifully stocked gift shop, and a cafe for our visitors to enjoy. If you live or maintain a studio space in the local authority area you are applying to, and you have submitted an End of Project Report (if you are a previous VACMA recipient), you can now apply for Visual Artist and Craft Maker Awards (VACMA). This is dedicated financial support for your creative development, research, and professional skills development.

Delivered via Creative Scotland in partnership with local authorities, the scheme offers fixed bursaries of £500 and £1,000, that you can invest directly in your practice.

Some examples of what we have funded:
Creative Experimentation - To test out new ideas, research sustainable materials, or develop an entirely new body of work.
Skill Enhancement - To fund professional training courses, peer-to-peer learning, mentoring, or tailored residencies.
Essential Equipment - To purchase specific equipment if you have a clear rationale for how it will advance your technical capacity and creative development.

📣Save the date! 📣

Inverness Museum and Art Gallery (IMAG) and the Highland Folk Museum will be holding a joint Anniversary Collections Conference on Friday 13th November 2026 in Inverness Town House.

Celebrating 201 years since the founding of the museum in Inverness and 90 years since Dr Isabel F Grant established the Highland Folk Museum, the conference will focus on all that makes the museums' Highland collections unique.

The day will feature 4 speakers who have carried out research on our collections, and will be followed by a reception at IMAG to view the latest exhibition and some of the objects featured in the talks.

The conference is supported by Museums Galleries Scotland Small Grants Fund.

📣The Community Gallery has changed over this week!

Eliza Jones is a student from Plockton High School. Her work centres around her hyper fixations, through a variety of mediums Eliza captures pop culture figures in a vibrant way, capturing their likeness and individuality. Eliza is a high functioning autistic and didn’t know she was on the autistic spectrum until she joined high school.

Eliza explains; "I use art as a sort of therapy. If I've had a particularly hard day, then you will probably find me doing art in my bedroom.”

By showing her work Eliza hopes to inspire more people to pursue art as a way to find peace in a busy world.

We had a great time at our August volunteering session where some of our volunteers helped us to do an audit of our prehistoric stone tools. As ever, a huge thank you to all those who have given their time to volunteer with us!

We will run further sessions working with other areas in our Archaeology collections in September and October, with a morning and afternoon session each day.

Basketmaking is one of the world’s oldest crafts, yet it continues to evolve in exciting and unexpected ways. Contemporary makers combine traditional weaving skills with innovative ideas, materials and forms, creating work that is both rooted in heritage and relevant to modern life.

Intertwined showcases the work of contemporary basketmakers whose distinctive approaches highlight the breadth and creativity of this evolving craft. Throughout the year, the Foyer Gallery caseswill feature a changing programme of makers, offering visitors the opportunity to discover the many ways basketry can be interpreted today.

Based in Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, Helen Jackson is widely recognised for blending age old cafting techniques, with contemporary art forms. The romance of hand woven willow baskets, lies in their deep connection to the living landscape, ancient hand-weaving traditions, and rural heritage, making them bridges between functional utility, with enduring, sustainable art.

Shimmering is an exhibition for new works by Academicians Anne Bevan RSA and Mary Bourne RSA, and last Friday: August 21st, we invited folk along to a preview for these new works. This was followed by an exhibition tour on August 22nd; a live event where the artists discussed their artwork, sharing the inspiration, background, and process behind the pieces. We would like to thank everyone that came along to both events, they were thoroughly enjoyable!

It’s International Dog Day! A perfect opportunity to share portraits of some very good dogs from our David Whyte photography collection.

David Whyte ran his photography business in Inverness during the late 1800s, mostly focusing on portraits - including some four-legged friends! The business ran under Whyte’s name until 1985, when over 140,000 negatives and prints were donated to the Museum.

VACMA applications are now OPEN

In 2026/27, VACMA will offer fixed bursaries of £500 and £1000, so you could now apply for the level of bursary that best suits your circumstances, rather than by experience. As there have been some changes made to the application process, so please do read the Guidance for Applicants, which you will find via our website. Information can also be found about Personal Access Costs, within the guidance notes.

VACMA will give priority to applications that clearly demonstrate:
• Commitment to practice – your application demonstrates relevant experience and an ongoing commitment to the development of your visual arts or craft practice.
• Creative development – your application clearly describes how the funding will help you develop as an artist or maker, and the difference it will make to your practice.
• Clear project plan – your application provides a clear outline of what you plan to do with the funding and explains how you will do it.

We will have two deadlines in 2026/27:

Autumn deadline: 5pm, 20 October 2026
Winter deadline: 5pm, 2 February 2027

An exhibition for new works by Academicians Anne Bevan RSA and Mary Bourne RSA.

When an artist is elected an Academician by their peers at the Royal Scottish Academy, they select a representative piece of their work that will be accessioned into the organisations's nationally significant collection. This is known as the artists's Diploma Work.

For RSA 200 Inverness Museum & Art Gallery will host an exhibition by RSA Academicians Anne Bevan and Mary Bourne. Each have connections to the ecology of specific places in the north of Scotland, and their new work will link to a poetic, subjective view of the sea.
