The building dates to the early 18th century and has been sympathetically restored to provide an ideal gallery space on two floors with exhibitions of original contemporary fine and applied art by artists from Scotland and throughout Britain. A close relationship with our artists ensures the finest possible selection of works from both established artists and emerging talent.

Many of Ian McWhinnie’s paintings for his forthcoming show evoke the geology and history of the Moray Coast. His work has been paired with hand-carved sculptures made from serpentine, a metamorphic rock found on the Moray Coast, by Gary Webster. Here are McWhinnie ‘Portsoy Portrait’ and Webster ‘Herdmanston Hare’.

New work has been arriving in the gallery recently as we stock up for Ch……s (!) including unique jewellery by Cesta Browning. She combines her own handmade porcelain motifs with gemstones to create beautifully colour-balanced items of jewellery. Her inspiration comes from organic and found objects and continued experimentation. Pieces over 7g are hallmarked, her hallmark is registered with the London Assay Office.

Joe Davie has been fascinated by the idea of plaque doctors since his days at Glasgow School of Art in the 1990s. We would highly recommend Daniel Defoe’s book ‘A Journal of a Plaque Year’, although published in 1722, it is a good read!

This ‘Commemorative Box Suite of 20 Artist’s Proofs and a Frontispiece Embossed with a Castle Gallery Motif’ dates to 2021. Trevor Price made it especially to celebrate 20 years of the Castle Gallery and it is a one-off. Many of the featured drypoint and engraved relief prints are from editions which have subsequently sold out and are therefore no longer available. 20 handmade prints from Trevor’s Waves and Woodland Series would usually sell in total for £4,400.Special Price of £3,000 for 20 original prints and the presentations box with frontispiece.

Bargains are to be had if you know where to look for them! Luckily, we know a thing or two and would like to alert you to this limited edition bound book which can be purchased at a snitch from the Castle Gallery for £1,000.
This book, Vier + Four, features the work of Scottish and German printmakers and literary figures, including Alasdair Gray and Liz Lochhead, with signatures. It was a collaboration between the Glasgow Print Studio and Druckwerkstatt Berlin at the time the Berlin Wall came down and was published in 1990 in an edition of 150. The Scottish printmakers featured are Joseph Davie and Murray Robertson and they each have ten pages of handmade screenprints in this book, together with a similar number of prints from their German counterparts. 40 handmade prints of this quality and size would usually sell in total for something in the region of £7,200. This limited edition bound book is a real collectors’ piece.
