Unveiling of renovated Hythe Pier Railway Luggage Truck

Hythe Pier Heritage Association unveiled its Hythe Pier Railway renovated luggage truck on Thursday May 7th, following 15 months of painstaking craftsmanship, volunteer Jeff Drodge has completed the rebuilding using as much of the original parts and materials as possible.

It was constructed in 1909, one of two, for the transportation of “heavy goods and passenger’s luggage” along the 640 metres length of Hythe Pier. Propulsion was by manpower along tracks sunk into the decking on the north side of the structure in May 1909. Although not as originally intended, ferry passengers and promenaders were occasionally afforded a “lift”. The trucks were modified for the wider gauge raised track installed on the south side in 1921. The electric railway, drawing power from a third rail, commenced operating in July 1922.

Whilst the truck still in use after 117 years is pushed or pulled along the tracks daily, the other truck didn’t fare so well, having been shunted from the pier into the water just weeks after the railway was inaugurated. No record can be found of any recovery.

The surviving truck differed very little from its original design until this renovation. Whilst much of the undercarriage and the bogies have been retained, the former elevated flatbed arrangement has been removed with new side panels now fitted. One side is hinged, allowing it to be dropped down for easier loading. Racks have been installed to allow the transportation of two bicycles.

The renovation is a part of Hythe Pier Heritage Association’s programme to restore Hythe’s historic pier and iconic pier railway. Further work will need further funding; donations can be made through the community benefit society’s website www.hythepierha.org.uk.

We are saddened to learn of the the death on 7th March 2026 of Edward S. Fort OBE, LLD (Hon). Through the charitable foundation he established, the Beaulieu Beaufort Foundation (BBF), Mr Fort was a great supporter of the restoration of the pier train, with BBF funding the work on the first train carriage.

With the continuing involvement of BBF in the restoration of the train, HPHA named the restored second tractor unit "Edward Fort" in his honour. The naming ceremony took place in August 2024, with the ceremony performed by Mr Fort's daughter, Mrs Jo Shields.

We send our condolences to the family.

We are delighted to hear that Hythe Pier will finally re open on 2nd April.
As a charity, one of our key purposes is to enable the community access to the pier through our restoration projects . We were therefore pleased to make a financial contribution towards the reopening works.

We are pleased to announce that Derek Harper, co-Chair of the Hythe Shed (at the pier) organising committee, has joined our Board of Directors. Derek's acceptance of this role means that we can better co-ordinate the actions of the two organisations.

HPHA and Hythe Shed (at the pier) have always worked closely together on many matters concerning the restoration of the pier and pier train and this will not alter.

The restoration of the third carriage continues, with the rebuild of the driver's cab. When possible we re-use original pieces in the rebuild, here you see the original driver's door.

As always, thanks to our chums at Hythe Shed (at the pier) for their support and effort in the restoration of this driving carriage.

Progress continues to be made on the rebuild of the train luggage truck. The truck will have a wooden floor with supports able to store bicycles and enough space and attachments to hold pushchairs.
