Artists in the Gallery | Jill Mills

Something a little different for today’s Artists in the Gallery.

Jill Mills creates knitted jewellery, bringing textile techniques into jewellery making to create pieces with plenty of texture and individuality.

This month’s selection includes necklaces combining delicate knitted structures with soft, tactile elements and small decorative details.

Artists in the Gallery | Esther Newnham Brown

Those of you who know Gallery BN5 will already know Esther Newnham Brown, so this month we’re turning the spotlight onto one particular painting: Latin Lover.

There’s movement, drama and more than a little romance here. Esther captures the energy between the two figures, with their pose and the sweep of red creating a wonderful sense of movement across the painting.

And with a title like Latin Lover, there’s clearly a little sense of humour in there too.

Artists in the Gallery | Barbara Munford

Barbara Munford returns to Gallery BN5 this October.

Barbara’s work has a wonderfully distinctive quality, built up through fine, delicate marks and carefully considered detail. In this example, a restrained palette is punctuated by warmer touches of colour, while the generous white space keeps the composition beautifully simple.

It’s the sort of work that invites you to get a little closer and discover just how much is going on in those tiny marks.

Artists in the Gallery | Greta Meeten

Greta Meeten joins us at Gallery BN5 this October with her wonderfully varied textile and mixed-media work.

Based in Sussex, Greta has a passion for textiles and enjoys experimenting with different ways of transforming fabric and yarn. Her work incorporates techniques including embroidery, knitting and fabric dyeing, often bringing found objects and recycled fabrics into the mix.

There’s a playful side to Greta’s work too, with her subject matter ranging from the natural world to vintage fashion and objects from a bygone era. She also shares her love of textiles through hand-embroidery workshops in Storrington.

We’re delighted to have Greta’s work in the gallery this October.

Artists in the Gallery | Angela Manuel – Ways With Glass

Angela Manuel of Ways With Glass returns to Gallery BN5 this October with her colourful fused glass.

Angela’s aim is to showcase the natural beauty of glass while creating pieces that are also functional. Her work ranges from serving bowls and trinket dishes to mirrors, coasters, platters and pendants. Colour is central to what she does, with inspiration coming from travel, architecture, landscapes, art and design.

It’s art that doesn’t necessarily need to stay on the wall. Angela creates pieces designed to be used, enjoyed and to bring a little more colour into everyday life.

Artists in the Gallery | Melissa Birch

Melissa Birch returns to Gallery BN5 this October with her distinctive botanical printmaking.

Inspired by the natural world, Melissa’s work transforms botanical forms into striking compositions of shape, line and colour. There’s a lovely balance between the bold and the delicate in her work, with strong plant forms sitting alongside finer, more intricate details.

This piece is a beautiful example. Rich red botanical forms stand boldly against the softer blue, while the pale grasses weave their way through the composition.

Artists in the Gallery | Kasia Kaldowski

There’s a wonderful energy to Kasia Kaldowski’s work, and perhaps that comes from an artist who seems determined not to be confined to one particular way of painting.

Kasia is both a painter and art curator, and her work moves between landscape, gardens, abstraction and more experimental pieces. She describes her approach as using different styles and techniques to best capture the mood or message of a painting. Her landscapes and garden works in particular explore nature, colour and light.

The piece we have chosen for October is a lovely example. Layers of greens, flashes of pink and yellow, and loose, energetic marks give the impression of being right amongst the planting rather than simply looking at it.

Artists in the Gallery | Linda Thompson

Linda Thompson is back at Gallery BN5 this October with more of her beautifully observed animal paintings.

There’s a real sense of character in Linda’s work. Her subjects aren’t simply studies of animals, they have personality and presence too. This rather magnificent white horse demonstrates that beautifully.

Linda’s work covers a variety of animal subjects, with careful attention given to expression, posture and those small details that make each one individual.
