Sometimes the smallest encounters make the best subjects.

Sally Brownie’s work has a lovely observational quality, finding a moment of quiet drama in the natural world. This little blue tit, perched somewhat precariously above an equally tiny mouse, is a wonderful example.

Sally is a local artist based in Fulking, and her work can be found at Gallery BN5 this September.

Artists in the Gallery | Melissa Birch

From garden plants and seed heads to birds, bees and the small creatures we might otherwise overlook, the natural world provides a rich source of inspiration for Sussex printmaker Melissa Birch.

Melissa creates her linocuts entirely by hand, carving each design before hand-printing onto paper. Her love of simple forms and strong lines gives her work its wonderfully distinctive character.

Working in oils, Caroline specialises in paintings inspired by the Sussex countryside and coast, as well as rural Brittany, capturing the landscapes and places that surround her.

Artists in the Gallery | Sarah Duffield

Meet Sarah Duffield, a Sussex based artist and one of the artists currently showing at Gallery BN5.

Sarah paints re-imagined local landscapes, using vibrant colour to express her emotional connection to the places around her. The South Downs are a constant source of inspiration, particularly its rolling hills, changing light and distinctive clumps of trees.

Rather than simply reproducing a view, Sarah records the shapes and lines she sees before rearranging, overlapping and simplifying them in the studio. The result is her wonderfully distinctive style, capturing the feeling of a landscape and the sense of peace, hope and wonder she experiences within it.

Artists in the Gallery | Julia White

Meet Julia White, a Sussex-based botanical artist and printmaker and one of the artists currently showing at Gallery BN5.

Julia’s relationship with the Sussex landscape is at the heart of her work. She forages for plants across the South Downs, studying their forms as well as the folklore and medicinal uses associated with them.

Working with traditional printmaking alongside painting and digital imagery, she often uses the plants themselves to make impressions, monoprinting directly onto wood or pressing them onto zinc and steel plates. Gold leaf, insects and butterflies also feature throughout her beautifully layered work.

There is often more to Julia’s work than first meets the eye, with plants used as metaphors for strength, hope and resilience, and a subtle Oriental influence drawn from her early childhood in Singapore.

Meet David Harvey of Just Wood, one of the talented makers currently showing at Gallery BN5.

David is a woodturner, creating beautifully crafted pieces that celebrate the natural character of wood.

From decorative pieces to functional objects such as these wonderfully individual clocks, his work lets the grain, colour and character of the timber take centre stage. Each piece has its own variations, making the finished object completely individual.

There’s something particularly satisfying about an object that is both beautifully made and genuinely useful.
