YB | Yellow Broom

Yellow Broom, a collaborative two-person design studio quietly rooted in the Cairngorms National Park. With foundations in visual art, design and contemporary craft practice, the
duo create sculptural, thought-provoking, functional pieces that sit at the intersection of sculpture, design and material culture. Each YB piece embodies a deep respect for the
environment, materials, procurement and process. Narrative, people and place are integral to their work.

Blackened. YB8

This minimal overhead light is hand crafted from charred locally grown and milled steam- bent ash. Inspired by the shifting moods of the highland seasons and the deep, dark
corries of the Cairngorms, this statement overhead light offers dual configurations that evoke connections with our ever-changing landscape. As a signature, commissionable
piece from Yellow Broom, this striking overhead light embodies the studio’s commitment to functional design, simplicity, exceptional craftsmanship and their deep connection to place.

Made to order. Available in natural or charred.

SH | Steve Haden

Steve Haden creates handcrafted brushes and brooms that blur the boundaries between functional object and sculptural form. Rooted in traditional craftsmanship and natural materials, each piece celebrates process, utility and beauty, honouring heritage skills while elevating everyday tools into thoughtfully made contemporary objects.

Under the wing.

As children, we all seek safety under a mother’s wing; for a young bird, that sheltered space is the very definition of security. The same instinct for protection threads through
household traditions. For centuries, people have hung brooms by the front door to ward off bad spirits and welcome good luck, a custom now enjoying a modern revival through the
gifting of hand-made brooms. This work is a traditionally made broomcorn brush known as “Turkey wing” brooms, named for their sweeping, featherlike profile. The form traces back
to the Appalachian region in the 1800s. Earlier still, before the 1750s, people used actual turkey wings to whisk crumbs from tables and ash from hearths. In Celtic marriage rites, “jumping the broom” symbolised a couple’s union and a fresh
beginning. The broom, given afterward as a housewarming gift, stood for sweeping away old energy to make space for the new. These brooms also reflect Shaker ideals: utility and
beauty in harmony. They are “functional art,” with patterned, woven handles that hang gracefully on the wall while serving daily life. High-quality examples are made from 100%
broomcorn, usually left in its natural state. Today, makers in small, rural workshops continue the craft with an emphasis on sustainability and natural materials, objects of care
designed to protect, to clean, and to grace the home.

interconnectedness of nature, inviting closer attention to the fragile beauty and complexity of the living world.

NM | Naomi McIntosh

Naomi’s practice explores the emotional and sensory experience of nature through material and form, working primarily with sustainably sourced timber. Based in the
Cairngorms National Park she draws upon a background in architecture and design, At the core of her work is a desire to capture and share the sanctity of the natural world by
exploiting intangible and ephemeral qualities of landscape and it’s rhythms, atmospheres and life cycles.

Lost Song. Woven laser cut Beech, burnt and stained.

Lost Song is 1 of a series of 5 vessels that visually capture bird song through data. Currently there are 67 species on the RSPB “red list” of globally threatened species in severe decline. Among those most at risk are those that fill the summer skies with song; corncrakes, turtle doves, cuckoos, skylarks and nightingales. Each of these vessels is named after one of these birds. Linear forms of data taken from oscillograms of sound
recordings, create feather like structures and nest like qualities. Appearing solid at times and transparent at others. These pieces signify ecological grief whilst recognising the possibility of changing course.

Dark Places . Diptych I Caithness Cliffs

Reflecting on the loss of my treasured mother-in-law, who was born in Bangladesh and buried in the Highlands, I explore how her life’s journey led her to rest in this magical place. The midnight cliffs of Caithness whisper her absence. Her memory is carried through the inky waters and river stones of Strathspey. This work emerged from mourning the loss
of a treasured maternal figure.

My mother in law was born in Bangladesh and buried in the Highlands. Reflecting on how her life story led her to this magical place, I have explored the relationship between land, memory and belonging by merging Highland landscapes with the garments she left behind. Her black saree is carried pulled and swayed by the current of an inky Strathspey burn, and the memory of her reflected in the midnight cliffs of Caithness
