Loosen your Grip

In Loosen Your Grip, Joanna Wilson explores the tension between control and surrender — a recurring negotiation in both the internal and external landscapes of the self. Hands dominate the foreground, clenched yet open, rendered with both anatomical care and abstract distortion. They are a site of action, anxiety, and release. The surrounding composition vibrates with contradiction: structure collapses into chaos, soft tones are pierced by acidic jolts of colour, and lines both bind and liberate the form. The body is tangled, not trapped — a reflection of the invisible scripts we hold and the freedom that follows their unraveling. This work reflects the central Code-switch theme: navigating multiplicity and transformation. Loosen Your Grip invites the viewer to consider what is gained not by holding tighter, but by letting go — of roles, perfection, and the illusion of control. It is a portrait of resistance, but also of resilience, sketched through colour, gesture, and surrender.

Inner earth

In various mythologies, Inner Earth is believed to contain hidden civilisations, landscapes, ecosystems—possibly even a central sun. Of course, the Earth's interior is well understood in geology, comprising a crust, a mantle, and outer and inner cores—none of which leaves room for the popular notion of Inner Earth. Quite clearly these concepts—both known and unknown—have captured the imagination of the artist. She positions her figurative subject in an abstracted scene of transcendent colours and fantastical shapes. This is a picture space demarcated by dualistic thinking: for every vibrant hue there is a pastel counterpart, suggesting that two things can be true at once; i.e. science and mythology may together hold the answers. The broad contours and ‘join the dots’ mark-making guide the viewer in a visual meditation on the possibility of something mysterious and complex concealed within.
