On this day, in 1863, author Violet Jacob was born into the Kennedy-Erskine line, the family who owned the House of Dun and its estate. 🚪

Violet was influential in the revival of interest in Scots writing and wrote many of her poems in the Scots vernacular, some of which were based in and around Montrose. Her most celebrated piece today is 'Flemington', a novel set during the Jacobite rebellion of 1745. 📖

Oftentimes, books of historical importance become forgotten. You may even find a rare edition just lingering in your attic, collecting dust. If you have any items you wish to know the value or history on, why not bring them along to Montrose Museum for Valuation Day on the 13th September, between 12-16:00. Experts from Lyon & Turnbull will be attending to value objects for a £5 donation to the museum as part of their 200th anniversary. 💍🔎

Angus Collections Centre has officially opened at Brechin Business Park.

The new Centre is fully accessible and will give visitors a look into the workings of a modern, accredited museum service.

Have you had a chance to visit the latest exhibition in our upper gallery?

Playing with Fire - Woodfired Pottery in Angus & Beyond is a stunning exhibition of ceramics that showcase work not only from the Angus Woodfired Kiln (Agnes, Agus Angus) but also other potters from Japan, Brazil, USA, Portugal, Germany, England and Scotland who share the collective passion and dedication to woodfiring.

Woodfiring ceramics is the process of firing pottery in a kiln fuelled by wood rather than electricity or gas. It's one of the oldest ceramic techniques, dating back thousands of years and is prized because the fire itself becomes part of the creative process, creating surfaces that are impossible to replicate with electric /gas kilns or commercial glazes. The process itself is also highly collaborative and immersive, with firing requiring teams of people to feed the kiln from start to finish.

Playing with Fire is on until 11th October, we are open each day except Tuesdays, free admission, dog friendly too, lift available.

Don't forget our Meet the Artist event taking place this Saturday 29th August 12:00 - 14:00 pm, here at the Meffan Museum & Art Gallery.

Everything Flows:
Time and Memory in an Angus Glen

Join us for a fascinating artist's talk with Bill Duncan, whose exhibition Everything Flows is currently on display at the Meffan Museum & Art Gallery.
Drawing inspiration from the landscapes, coastlines and waterways of Scotland, Bill's work explores themes of movement, change and our connection to the natural world. During this special event, Bill will discuss the ideas, processes and inspirations behind the exhibition, offering visitors a unique insight into his artistic practice.
This is a wonderful opportunity to hear directly from the artist, ask questions, and discover the stories behind the artworks.
