Yesterday I had the annual pleasure of Chelsea Flower Show, but the unexpected delight of the day was seeing these paintings beforehand on Pimlico Road. A Winifred Nicholson and a John Nash hanging in an interior design showroom - beautiful modern British art without even going to an art gallery!

Thank you to for this treat for the eyes and thank you for your wonderful art history classes which I remembered again when I spotted these.

Concrete speckled coasters, handmade by Monika Czyszczon in Gloucestershire. At the end of an exhibition where Monika’s concrete accessories had been really popular, I somehow ended up with 3 coasters!

So I’m offering them now for £10 for the 3 (1 each in blush, sage and yellow). Cork backed. DM if you’d like you buy and add a touch of fun to your desk or bedside table!

28/02/2024

Nick and Gaby Ward make these in their Herefordshire studio (although Gaby once studied ceramics in Farnham). I’ve sold many of these at previous exhibitions (should be £18 each) but with just a couple remaining, I’ll happily sell for £10 each including UK delivery.

Earthenware with sgraffito seed-head design. Left hand side in video is duck-egg blue. Right hand side is turquoise. Both approx 7cm tall. Dishwasher safe. DM if you’d like them - only these 2 available.

“Rambler” is slightly smaller than the other two Ellen Merchant pieces I have for sale (see previous posts) so is available at the give-away price of £30! (I originally exhibited this at £80 but I need to make space for new work and this deserves to be on someone’s wall.)

A fine-art giclee print, signed by the artist. 59cm h x 42cm w. Hang like this with magnetic hangers or frame behind glass.

DM if you’d like to buy. Only 1 available.

Collection from Farnham or add £7 for p&p.

Next in my little studio sale is this bluebell print, also by Ellen Merchant but in a fresh green and cornflower blue. So pretty and somehow old-fashioned and contemporary at the same time!

65cm h x 45cm w. Signed by the artist.

I originally exhibited this piece at £100 but now offering at just £40. Can hang informally from magnetic oak hangers as shown or you could frame behind glass. DM if you like to make this original piece yours!

The painting that I bid on in the Secret Postcard Auction as a fundraiser for the Royal West of England Academy has arrived and I adore it!

When I bid, I didn’t know who the artist was so it was such a surprise to not only receive the artist’s name, but also a full page of A4 with its story, telling me all about the artist, this watercolour and the model.

Bristol artist Chez Watts (unfortunately not on instagram) made this painting back in 1988 whilst living in Maine, USA. His model, Liza Bouchard, was a student and “a yoga and cycling enthusiast” with “an astonishing skill to be able to hold the most precarious of poses for long periods”. The note says that Chez made over 600 sketches, drawings and paintings of her during his 8 year stay!

Swipe for a couple of other paintings - I’m not sure if they’re also of Liza - from Chez’s website. What a lovely discovery - I shall treasure my “secret postcard”!

First day of October and although it’s still so mild, there’s no escaping autumn. These photos are from a previous Autumn Exhibition and although we’ve made some changes in the garden since, these favourites are still here (sculptures and the plants) and in their prime this weekend.

I shown and sourced artwork from many artists over the last 8 years but one of the things I hope I’m known for is colour - I just love using bright colours to change how a space feels, to surprise and invigorate!

This wonderful painting by Roz Kightley had such an energising orangey red background to offset the beautiful blue jug and subtle flowers - the perfect composition and balance of colour.

As well as curating exhibitions and hosting creative workshops, I also love to help people find artworks for their homes - either on a one-to-one basis or through their interior designer.

It’s a real privilege to use my many artist contacts to suggest pieces that can bring joy to your space and really personalise your home.

If you’d like to chat about how we could work together to find the perfect artwork, do get in touch.

After lots of new followers these last few weeks, I’m here to say hello and welcome to Magpie Contemporary Art! I like to describe myself as a visual magpie - always on the look out for something new and beautiful and finding ways to put them together to bring joy to a home!

(The first time I heard the visual magpie expression I was only in Sixth Form. The amazing artist that I was doing my A Level project about used it to describe her practice and how she collected items together for a still life composition. I loved painting with her and still remember those conversations.)

The last of our Spring/Summer workshops was amazing fun, but also pushed all of the participants out of their creative comfort zone. To move towards painting semi-abstract leaf and flower shapes, Lara challenged us to sketch from nature but then use our memory rather than our drawings to paint from. Focusing on the negative shapes and editing our work, regularly turning the circular paper to avoid our work becoming representational: painting less requires a surprising amount of concentration!

Keep in touch via my mailing list (link in bio) if you’d like to know about future workshops here, or follow .artist if you’d like to see more of Lara’s beautiful work (she’s got the semi-abstract florals totalled nailed!!)

Flowers for Mother’s Day sorted? If not, you could choose a more long-lasting bunch by treating your mum to one of our workshops. Through April, May and June I have organised a series of fabulous workshops and you could choose to paint a floral lampshade, make a crepe-paper flower, or spend a whole day looking at flower and leaf shapes in our garden and abstracting them into a simplified, circular painting. Each workshop is led by a friendly and experienced artist and is suitable for beginners and more accomplished creatives. All the details can be found through the link in bio. Perfect as an original gift or to treat yourself!

I’ve been showing a selection of paintings to some clients and although the point of the exercise was to show them in their own home, I just couldn’t resist briefly hanging this one in my own!

Suzanne Winn’s landscapes capture a feeling of freedom and light and this large painting “Once Upon A Dream” is an absolute joy to view. Swipe to see a close-up.

(This piece wasn’t quite right for my clients so is available to buy - message me or for more info.)

A few weeks ago I revisited the wonderful Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden, part research for a client proposal, but part pleasure too. Combining a huge variety of outdoor art with the most enchanting water-filled garden, hidden away down a county lane, it’s one of Surrey’s real gems. It’s only open until the end of the month, or put it on your list for next spring!

I particularly loved this piece, Flight of Fancy by Jilly Sutton, but I could happily have brought several others home with me too!
