We're delighted to welcome back two historic maps from our collection, following their conservation at the Scottish Conservation Studio. We were able to conserve our embroidered map of the world, from the era of Captain Cook, and a hand-drawn geological map from 1853, showing the locations of important fossil discoveries, thanks to funding from the Idlewild Trust and the Gordon Fraser Paper Conservation Fund respectively. Both maps have also been framed, protecting them from further deterioration.

Wishing you great romance on St Valentine's Day - and sharing a favourite from our collection, this folded paper “Puzzle Purse” Valentine. Popular in the 18th & 19th centuries, this example is probably Victorian. Inside these folded treasures would be messages of love and sometimes locks of hair. On the outside, round the edges, a message reads: "My dear the heart that you behold, Will break when you these lines unfold, Even as my heart with lovesick pain, Sore wounded is and breaks in twain". The message inside remains a secret!

Would you like to become part of the Elgin Museum team? The Moray Society (Elgin Museum) is looking for a Treasurer to help take our organisation through what will be a significant few years of change and development.

You'll have experience in book-keeping, finance and administrative procedure. A connection to the Moray area and keen interest in Moray’s heritage is desirable, given The Moray Society’s organisational and charitable objectives.

Elgin’s Independent Museum

Elgin Museum is Scotland’s oldest continually independent museum. We receive no funding from central or local government, relying entirely on donations, project funding and the work of our excellent team of volunteers!

The Museum’s collections are housed in a Category A listed building at the east end of Elgin High Street, Moray, in the North East of Scotland. Here you can see objects from all over the world, with a special focus on Moray, and from all periods of history and prehistory from before the dinosaurs to the present day. Please explore our website to find out more about the Museum: changing exhibitions, school visits, family events, lectures, resources for heritage and collections research, as well as how to hire our beautiful building as a venue for weddings and other special events.

We are open from Easter until the end of October and over the winter by special arrangement - please don’t hesitate to call or email to enquire.
